Look into being a pathologist.

There are obviously individuals with MDs who have full time careers in non-patient facing fields (administration, politics, research, education, etc.). There are ways you can tailor your training to develop the skills and experience needed to land research grants.

With that said, you can't get through medical school without seeing patients and you would likely still need to complete a residency program where, while you might not be patient facing, you would still be practicing clinical medicine.

If you want to do research, just take post-graduate training in the area you are interested in.

Both radiologist and pathologist are going to be replaced with AI in the very near future. Going to be hard for them to repay their student loans.
