More importantly there’s no shame in losing to a guy like Parker Wolfe, he was clearly an Olympic level athlete last year, but didn’t have the standard.
Mike Smith still hasn’t been able to get Aaron Sahlman to the line. I’m assuming he’s hurt. If he is hurt it’s no surprise being at NAU.
Aaron Sahlman is academically ineligible to race ATM.
I totally agree Smith is overrated. But wait until next year and you’ll really see NAU go downhill
The women's side has enough past recruiting and under classmen in the fold to still be a podium contender for a few more years. Just get like one new high leverage upperclassman transfer a year and they are instantly championship contenders.
Men's side is looking bleak though. Might not be top 5 contenders for a long time after this year.
Mike Smith is far overrated as a coach. He has the talent and still can’t get it done.
Anytime a NAU thread comes up the assistant Jarred Cornfield will either repot the thread and or post a fake reply. He’s an odd dude and I feel bad for the team next year. No one singed on to NAU to run for Cornfield and Smith screwed his incoming class and didn’t tell them until they arrived.
TUCSON -- NAU's cross country teams came down from the mountain Saturday to, in the words of coach Mike Smith, experience some grass, some lower elevation and lots of heat, if not stiff competition, at the Dave Murray Invitat...

That’s what I thought when I saw the deal with Mike Smith taking a Nike coaching deal. I’m sure Mike Smith knew this for a long time yet he didn’t care about any of the freshman class coming in. That in itself says a lot about his character. I don’t know the details but this sounds like a real d!ck move on MS behalf.

A lot of dumb posts on this thread, but this isn't one of them, IMO. On the men's side, only Colin Sahlman and Perez look to have serious all-American potential next year. Unless they score in the portal (which, given their history and pedigree, they could), I don't think NAU is going be a podium team the next three years. This year's team has not looked like a podium contender all year. And this year's team graduates 3 of their top 4. The cupboard looks pretty bare, by their elevated standards. They look like a team that should finish 6-10 the next couple of years. I'm sure they'll recruit well, but it's very rare these days that 18-20-year-old Americans make a dent at the NCAA DI level.
The women's team should be podium for the foreseeable future. Lots of young talent and depth.

And also competition is just getting crazy now with teams just bringing over 3-4 guys from abroad who are all possible All American finishers. Entire contender teams can just appear overnight which makes getting back into the top 5 even harder for NAU unless they join the trend (in more than just Australia/NZ which they did in the past for their importing of athletes)

The NAU era is gone. They are not impressive or underperforming this year thus far. I guess what do you expect from a coach who has one foot out the door and screwed the incoming freshman. Good thing for the transfer portal.
Ngl your post just shows ignorance. "he has the talent and still can't get it done". He really doesn't. The rosters he had from 2019-2023 were monstrously talented, but most of the top guys now simply aren't as talented. Colin is the main exception, but he's much more of a track speedster. He's never been as good at cross (high school doesn't count)

Colin Sahlman was one of the best HS cross country runners ever. Smith just keeps talent going with high mileage at altitude. He does a bad job individualizing training. This is why Colin is not a top cross country runner in the NCAA.
Smith has altitude and crap academics and that makes his job easy. With his bro voice he won’t fool anyone as a pro coach.
Smith is not a great coach. Not sure what the deal is with this Nike team next year. I don’t think athletes will flock to him though. He’s nothing special and I don’t see new athletes betting on him.

Right, but recruiting is far more important than training and living at altitude. Smith does just fine with talented runners like Young.
Sahlman has run 1:45.6 and is a 1500/5000m guy. The NCAA XC Championships are not within his range.
