I think this guessing what shape you are in stuff especially for a marathon is dumb.
Aren’t you training for months? I’m all about being positive but shouldn’t you be doing long tempos and stuff where you have a really good idea of how fit you are?
I remember reading Kipchoges training and him doing a 30-40k tempo once a week.
Did Emma do some 20-25 milers at all?
The runners never err on the faster side. They always say they are in 2:17 shape and then run 2:24. They never say they are in 2:24 shape and run 2:17.
Emma Bates is a non binary or what they call it? Non gender person...
No, Emma is very much a woman and is actually kinda hot. She's a decent marathoner on the world stage, but she just thinks she's better than she is.
I sometimes think she is attractive, but when I see the still frames for her Youtube interviews, she always looks like she has Crazy Eyes. You gotta watch out!

I've run quite a few marathons in the 2:18-2:22 time ranges back in my prime (including half a dozen sub 2:20s).
However, I'd actually say it's sometimes hard to exactly predict if you're going to pop a sub 2:19 or go over 2:22 sometimes until you get out there in the race and get into that last 10km.
Sure at Hansons we used to do "simulator" workouts (a "marathon goal pace run" for 26.2km or 16-miles at goal marathon pace). We usually did this on a high mileage week around big workouts like 3 x 3-miles at 10sec/mile faster than goal marathon race pace (pretty hard) and 2 x 6-miles. When I was coming off a 1:04 half PR and training for a "sub 2:15 marathon" I ran my simulator workout close to 2:12 marathon pace (granted it was only low 5-min miles for 16-miles).
Of course when I actually raced though, I only ran 2:16:52 and the whole "simulator" was never really a good predictor workout for most of us. I was "training for a sub 2:15" as a goal marathon pace (5:08/mile pace), but the real goal was honestly just to run under 2:18:00 and PR...
Still though, you think in your head during your marathon training build for months "I'm a 2:15:00 marathoner [or insert time goal a couple minutes faster than what you have ever run] and that's my goal race pace"...even if you end up running a few minutes slower in the actual race.
One little lingering injury or dropped gel or side stitch during the race and you can lose 2-4 minutes all in that last 10km. For marathoners that have consistently run around 2:20 the margins can be very thin.
I ran on Sunday - it was definitely not hot. A bit breezy but not windy. Close to perfect morning weather-wise.
Heat isn’t the same as humidity. I ran as well. Wave 1. It was definitely a bit humid. Still good conditions. But I wouldn’t say they were the true definition of “perfect” for a marathon.
61 degrees, 51 dew point is not "humid". Its ideal. A 7:30 start kept the Sun at a low altitude. Perfect. Stop kidding yourself. The American women were writing checks with their mouths that their bodies couldn't cash. Only Sullivan didn't get involved in that game. Gee, guess which woman came through? Sullivan. Theres a lot to like about her.
Record speculation should be kept in house, otherwise you look like a fool. I know what I'm talking about here. Been there done that. Between me and my coach. Three ARs.

I recall Kiptum only talking about wanting to break the course record last year, never the world record. So he undersold himself by over 3 minutes.
I think it’s so cringey that Emma is likely going to post a 10+ post recap of the race on Instagram. What is there to say? Stop talking and being so dramatic. Just own it. No excuses. I get there is likely a social media component to her contract, but it’s sad.

yeah I've always been skeptical of Hansons training, tbh.
For one, those simulator workouts? Not simulator workouts. They just look cool on paper.
Their training seems to be built around running an OCD level of mileage while at the same time without: long runs + enough specific training. All of that makes slow (relatively) marathoners. Send Mantz and Young to Hansons and they would instantly run 2-4 minutes slowers
Keira has posted some cryptic post on Instagram saying she was chatting to Emma on the bus and she ‘only had a couple of gels attached to bottles and she was hoping she could grab all her bottles to have enough gels’.
She says ‘a trivial conversation but you’ll see why I bring it up’.
But she’ll drag it out over a few days no doubt. Doesn’t Emma famously not take on water? And a couple of gels? I’m wondering if she missed a bottle with a gel. Again, no excuse. Elites should have this stuff nailed. Attach a gel to every bottle if you’re worried. Have a gel stuffed down your shorts! Fuel is so important.
Spot on malmo. Too many women were running their mouths and didn't come through except Sullivan. Now we will be treated to 10 instagram posts from each explaining why.

I saw that Keira post as well, but it came from Keira, not Emma. So maybe, just maybe, the explanation will come in the next post and not a week from now? One can dream.
Bates said that based on her workouts and the data her coach Joe Bosshard collects, she believes she is in 2:18 or 2:19 shape right now. She doesn't think this is the first time, either, but pointed out that in previous races, either the weather was too warm, the course was tough, or something else has gone wrong (she tore her plantar fascia after stepping in a pothole in Chicago last year).
She is hoping that the Chicago Marathon on Sunday is when the stars finally align for her but said she'd be happy with any improvement on her 2:22:10 pb.

I was hoping the same. Keira has just uploaded another post but no mention. They’re both gonna drag this out aren’t they?
