Some things never change. After running 3:26.0 in 1998 with still some races remaining, inclulding at Monaco, El G claimed that he would run 3:24 'minimum' before the end of the season.
No need to diss the GOAT miler.
He would have run 3:24 with the new tracks and shoes.
Don't forget how this man DOMINATED this competitive event for 7 years.
Correct correct correct sir!!!!!!!!!
You are spot on right here!!!!!!!!!
El G was the greatest and cleanest that ever was and ever will be amen!!!!!!!!!
3:22.50 I say at least!!!!!!!
Where is Jakob and Josh btw?????? They can't be found anywhere lol!!!!!!!
I've a feeling his coach ordered El G to rein it in a little after that 3:26.0. It was getting ridiculous, and him and his coach knew that EPO testing could come in the next year or two.
Sure, he could have run 3:22. That time is equivalent to 1:39, 7:11 and 12:20. It’s amazing he ever lost a race having that kind of talent.
Oh yes do not ever doubt it sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The El G from 1997-2000 would have run the 3000m in faster than 7:23 and 12:50 alright!!!!!!!!
At least 7:15 and 12:25, for sure sir!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On my neck alright!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't know about the 800m 1:39, I don't think it's a direct conversion because El G would be considered more of an endurance person towards 5000m than a 400m speed based runner towards 800m!!!!!
He retired at age 29. He ran through 3 olympic cycles and he would have been 33 in 2008. At the time, not many middle distance runner ran past 30. So it seemed perfectly reasonable to retire when he did.
He would have run 3:24 with the new tracks and shoes.

The biggest proof that El Guerrouj was clean, is the rumors spread about him.
I spend my day trying to filtrate anything about him while talking to Moroccan crowd among ancient runners .. and I don't find anything.
If he was dirty why his coach Kada proposed him to apply to FRMA presidency in 2019 against "the high Royal court supported" Ahizoun.
Some people say that only a royal décret can fire Ahizoun from the federation of athletism.
More more more importantly, El Guerrouj comes from an extreme conservative oriental background ... his friends are filtrated.
Nothing to do with the open mouth Aouita and his secret marriage, his social issues spread on the medias.
You will not find anything related to the personal life of El Guerrouj in medias, nothing about his wife or his daughter ... nothing about American snobism of Aouita.
Put Jakob, Kerr, Hocker and Naguse racing each other on an old track with 1980's spikes and then see if they can break 3:29. I will be surprised if they run like 3:31-3:30
the super shoes do not give a second plus to runners who are already at nearly perfect efficiency.
That reasoning brings to mind the claim that the very top Kenyan runners wouldn't benefit from taking EPO because they are already perfect, and therefore beyond the reach of any type of performance enhancement.
I've a feeling his coach ordered El G to reign it in a little after that 3:26.0. It was getting ridiculous, and him and his coach knew that EPO testing could come in the next year or two.
But we know that 7:17 is clean. We know that for sure. About 6 seconds faster than Hicham. But at least we know Jakob is doing it the clean way.
Yep. As clean as anyone has ever been in the history of the world. 3:26 and not even breathing hard. That's very believable.

Your post doesn't make much sense, just the usual "if a white runner runs faster than a doped African from 30 years ago, he must be doped to the max himself" type spam bot stupidity.
You're replying in a thread about super shoes and times, and I just accepted that El G would run 3:22 minimum today (with the same doping as the 90's). That's nearly 5 seconds faster than Jakob over 1500. Yet because Jakob runs 6 seconds faster over 3000m with wavelights, super shoes, and trampoline tracks, than El G did nearly 30 years ago, it proves Jakob must be doping and that I'm a racist? Right.
El G ran the 1500m 26 seconds faster than the great Paavo Nurmi did in 1924. The distance between Nurmi and El G is only and exactly 3 times as long as that between El G (1999) and Jakob (2024). Nurmi is known to have used testosterone back then. It follows that El G doped, right?

When will people here start to understand that the main benefit comes from saving your legs in TRAINING, so that you’re less beat up, more quality volume can be done in a cycle, which eventually translates to race results. Running efficiency for the 3+ race minutes is not the point of supershoes!
Retired the same year that EPO testing was introduced
Downright Trumpian bullsheet. EPO testing, such as it was, was introduced at the 2000 Olys in Sidney. El G announced his retirement in 2006.
Not sure what Trump has to do with it, but you are right to a degree.
We all know that EPO testing was introduced at the 2000 Olympics (where El G surprisingly lost, despite having a pacemaker in the final). Random EPO testing was gradually introduced from 2002. However, EPO testing was notoriously ineffective at this stage. It was announced in 2005 that a far more effective test was being developed and likely to be introduced in the coming years.
However, what probably spooked El G even more than that was the fact that in 2005 the IAAF started storing blood samples for re-testing, for when this new test or even more effective ones would be available.
Unfortunately, even now the EPO test is still not much more effective, although we do have the ABP, which wouldn't have applied to El G even if he had decided to carry on for a few more years.
