Having a party in the middle of the season wasn't ideal, I'll agree. But it was not some college rager, it was literally like an hour and a half of slideshow presentations.

They were obligated to receive money. It was a written contract. They were not able to take it away, but they were allowed to remove them from the roster. So hypothetically they could have had their 5th year paid, but not be athletes.

7th in the ACC when you're going up against UNC UVA Wake ND Syracuse etc is not something to be ashamed of. Don't expect kids with no professional running future to commit their lives to this sport. I am somewhat familiar with these other ACC team cultures and would not say we differed much. They partied too, but they had actual good coaches like Vin Milt etc, and got more scholarship money, resources and already had better established running success for easier recruiting. Not only did we not have a good coach, we had probably one of the worst coaches you could find.

Duke boys have been soft for a generation. You boys just aren’t very tough. It’s not about the coach…training knowledge is so widespread now. It’s the kids. They aren’t serious and haven’t been for a long time.

After the McDermott accident in 2009(?), they got it together and ran well for a few years, but eventually the draw of being a “Duke Bro” becomes too strong and they become middle of the road runners, despite getting really good recruits and having above average facilities.

Holding seniors on the top 7 accountable is totally fine. They held a party right before the biggest meet of the season and bad things happened at the party. They share responsibility. This isn’t grade school. Welcome to the real world, these men are adults. Time to accept the responsibility that comes with that.

Of course the athlete are weak. They weren't smart or fast enough to get into Stanford.

Sounds like ACC cross wasn't for you and you should have went to ECU or Davidson instead.

You're getting your school paid for to "commit" your life to the sport. I'm sure those that took your money will be significantly more dedicated to the sport then you. You can just be a student it sounds way more your speed

Taking away scholarship? That's crazy. The coaches wanted to free up money and used it as an excuse. It was the product of an odd situation where scholarship was being heavily used on athletes that possibly didn't deserve it (since they essentially had all their 5 years of scholarship concentrated on their 5th year). Wilbourn sees 2 full spots going to mediocre 5th years, and would prefer to use them to recruit higher profile grad transfers. Simple as that. Justifying moving scholarship money around. They weren't completely innocent in hosting that event, but you're misinformed if you can't see they were moreso victim of scholarship manipulation by Reck and Wilbourn.

Part of the responsibility of buying alcohol for a party is knowing who you are giving it to. You sound like an irresponsible idiot. That’s fine if you are drinking and are old enough and have a party but you are responsible. No different than a head coach is responsible for the actions of his/her staff. A bar has to watch out when they serve highly intoxicated individuals. If you have a party in your house, you are responsible for what happens. Welcome to adulthood!

Honestly the 5th year was charity anyways. You guys aren't worth a 5th year at Duke based off of performance. Giving minors alcohol was just the cherry on top.

It's perfectly reasonable to EITHER a) decide that running shouldn't be the center of your life and that you'd rather party in college, OR b) accept and expect to keep a scholarship. When you try to do BOTH...well, you're seeing right now how that works out.

You're literally arguing that you shouldn't have to take running that seriously because you'll never be a pro while also expecting to get paid to run.

I'm a neutral observer and don't know the athletes or the coaches in this situation. I am a former college runner who now has kids who are looking at colleges, which is why I looked at this thread.

It looks like you originally created this post to try and make the former coach look bad, but honestly it's a poor reflection on the team members. I think the coach was right in their actions. The word "neglect" keeps coming up in the article. What were these kids expecting from the coach? Were there difference expectations for emotional support because she is a female coach?

When I ran in college I went to practice and followed the training. I don't remember much support needed beyond that. The coach isn't a therapist. If you're dealing with mental health issues or alcohol addiction, then you should see a professional.

Additionally, it looks like there was a heavy party culture and a problem with kids missing practices. The article states 2 fast women runners transfers. Is it possible they transferred because the team wasn't focused and they wanted a more serious program?

From my perspective it looked like she wanted athletes who took running seriously and that some of these runners were used to partying, skipping practices and even showing up hungover and/or drunk to practice. When she cracked down on the behavior, the kids threw a temper tantrum and got the coaches fired.

Then go d3 if partying is a priority. You know nothing about high level running. It sounds like these young boys lied to coaches in the recruiting process about how serious they would be. Then they signed team rules with no intent to follow but the coaches should allow them to have a good time and party because that’s what you do in college and some people aren’t that serious about running. Hmm sounds like a whole lot of young people that want all the fun and everything they want is more important than anything else. Screw the coach and her family because they didn’t get what they wanted. What pathetic young men!! Yet here they are presenting as victims. So sad and such poor leadership from the Duke admins.

Who was the one girl that didn’t sign the petition to get Reckhardt fired? Was it Matoug or Emily Cole? Curious if Matoug didn’t run outdoor bc she was mad the coach got fired or if she was just done with being around soft teammates.
