you don't trust the lines because you don't understand the lines. the lines and the camera are aligned as close as humanely possible. i believe laser and satellite are used.

Nothing stops you from starting your own alternative 100 meter sprint where the winner is the one who first puts down a whole foot on the other side of the line, or have the WHOLE body pass the line just like the whole body has to be outside the 100 meter field at the start.

That said let's remember Marlene Ottey that was robbed of gold twice by photo finish, which is something the Americans always win, might it be that the companies that hold the patens are from the US? ;-P

And THAT said too Noah Lyles was clearly the man in faster speed moving past the 100 meter line.

And THAT said to I'll remind everyone that sometimes the fastest swimmer misses the gold because they fail to stick the "landing" over the last meter.

This sh*ts' complicated - but Thompson can take comfort in that he'll be paid a truckload for the first rematch in the Diamond League in a few weeks.

I believe that short red stand you see at the finish line (not the photocell stand, which is much taller) has a scrolling/rotating Omega logo and Olympic rings graphic set so it shows up clearly in the finish photo.

I was suprised to see that in the photo finish image the vertical line for Noah Lyles was placed at the front of his forward shoulder. His chest is hidden by the twist of the right side of his body. I was taught to place the line slightly in from the shoulder as a best guess to where the chest is. This would put the line almost exactly in line with Kishane. I thought the finish time was supposed to be measured from the chest, not from a protruding shoulder. Is it different for the Olympics?

Looking at it further, I'd say even with the line for Noah pushed back to compensate for the twist in his body his chest is still 2 thoudandths of a second ahead... these guys definitely need a rematch though.

Lyles was ahead after 80 meters and never relinquish the lead. I didn't even need the official photo as it appeared that Lyles won as I watched it the first time

The camera is lined up correctly. If you look at the overhead shot, you'll see small black dots where the finish line and lane lines intersect. These dots are for camera/timing alignment. In correct alignment you'll see black lane lines on a white "track". If it were wrong you would see an all white background or white lines on a purple track.

The finish camera doesn't have a shutter. There's a slot that the film (or "film" these days) passes in the direction of the runners. That exposure is what makes moving objects elongated. It's like someone walking in the direction of a panorama shot, only opposite because the camera is moving in a pano. So something not moving, like the line or a logo, will be normal .

Thompson completely bottled that final. Was in low 9.7 form easy. He tried to hard and lost his form, look at his other races and he ran same time but looked easy shutting down 20m out.

Lyles is The Guvnor. The Daddy. But is Thompson had ran what he should have Lyles would have got crushed. Too far behind.
