But watching the finish, it seems more like he LOST silver than WON bronze.
Congratulations nonetheless.
It seems even more like Aregawi lost gold rather than winning silver. Huge timing fail on his part, 20 more meters of race and he'd for sure have been in 1st
News flash: when people consistently point out Sha’Carri’s nonsense and overall immaturity, but uplift other black women, then it might not be about race….
Never understood how or who NBC chooses to hype for its coverage. In 2016, Dalilah Muhammad got 0 hype and she wins gold. She's talented and attractive and basically ignored. Gabby Thomas is getting a little attention but not nearly the hype Richardson got. I don't think Richardson choked. But maybe she was overhyped.
American coverage has always been super simplistic. They don’t trust the average American to really understand the more fringe events and don’t think viewers care about non-medal-contenders, so they spend a lot of time developing just a few “characters” from among those they think/know should medal from among a few sports they think people care about and especially, those who “should” win. Shacarri fits that category so she gets some of the very limited hype that NBC is willing to risk giving out. We should just be glad that for about one week a year, some events in our sport are among “events people care about!” I say done events because last night in the prime time show, NBC refrained from showing a replay or even highlights of the 10k where a countryman medaled and instead gave us a feature on Caeleb Dressel going to therapy. Because Dressel was one of NBC’s characters and they hadn’t counted on Fisher doing anything, so they weren’t going to pivot from their preordained plan of hyping Dressel.
But in Shacarri’s defense, she is also known to the wider public anyway; the THC scandal was much talked about and she also meets a certain demand among a certain demographic for “magic” heroes - her colorful personality and brashness is perfect for this. You know she’s made it in this area because people commonly refer to her by her first name only. See also “Denzel,” “Serena,” or in the past “Sidney” or “Martin.” But beyond all that, most people I work with know who she is and not simply from these Games, while they probably have already forgotten Jefferson and TT. So she generates some hype on her own regardless of what NBC does these two weeks.
By the way, all you clowns calling racism, how many of you were around and remember the shıt kicking a certain Galen Rupp used to get here, and it went on for ferking years.
Shacarri wasn’t racing any world record holders. That 10,000m had the 10,000/5000 record holder, a separate Half Marathon world record holder, a previous indoor mile world record holder. And many other all time fastest runners. That 100m had zero of the fast Jamaicans and no world record holders. It was shacarris to lose and she lost it, barely held on for a distant silver
Shacrri was a huge favorite, her odds implied 80%+ chance of winning. Based on her slow reaction time, she choked. She got off on a plea agreement for "marijuana," yet continued her brash and disrespectful antics.
To whom? Ato Boldon predicted everyone would be chasing the eventual champion from St Lucia and he was right..
Do you know the US history of event specialization in track and field?
The US men have struggled mightily beyond Salazar coached athletes in the 10K. The US has dominated in the 100. It is expected that the US excels in the 100, but not expected in the 10K.
Don’t try to turn this into a race thing, geez. Some of you are pathetic.
It also doesnt hurt that Richardson has significant maturity and professionalism issues, neither of which Fisher struggles with.
100%. The USA has historically been strong and won golds in sprints, relays, and some field events. Different countries are much stronger in the distance events....Fisher's bronze is a major accomplishment for an America athlete.
