It gets hard in the repechage though. They need to get top 3 out of 13 or 14 runners to make the semi. The person in the repechage thread suggesting that a good strategy would be to purposely tank the first round to go to the repechage wasn't thinking it through.
Ingebrigtsen and probably Cheruiyot or Kerr could have pulled it off. Not McSweyn or Hoare.
Riva tanked his last 150 or so when he saw he didn’t have a shot and ran great today. Messlek bagged it at 100 to go. Doyle, Habz, Mills, CPT all ran pretty honest races tho obviously maybe the last 30 they let up. But at least early definitely no predetermined tanking.
Obviously Ritz and Hoare cooking up an absolute stinker wasn't necessarily predictable, but really no clear reason to select either Spencer or McSweyn ahead of Meyers at this point.
other than the fact that they're faster than him and beat him head to head.
this is the Olympics not the London marathon, you can't get in on a charity spot.
She'll make the final, but then get eaten up by the WR holder, Ethiopians, Ugandans, etc, etc, take your pick who and how many.
PS - Hope I'm not being racist in any way, don't want to upset the USA audience as race seems to permeate their lives and obsess them in every way, especially here on LR.
Aw, it's OK. People obsess over race in the U.S. cuz they're discriminated and dehumanized and murdered over it! You may not see color, but boy oh boy - there are a lot of people who do. Thanks for your concern about being racist tho.
- all 3 beat him in head to heads before the team was selected (he only beat Spencer last month after the team was picked)
Yet all 3 stunk out the joint on the world stage.
Spencer has PR's of 3:31 and 3:52, yet he's broken 3:34 once.
SB's of 1:47.13, 3:37.32, 3:53.7.
Meanwhile, Meyers only has a PR of 3:33, but he's ran 3:50.1, broken 3:34 three times and broken 3:51 more times than Spencer has broken 3:54.5.
SB's of 1:47.11 2:17.44 (which is likely equal to 1:45-6), 3:33.3, 3:50.15
Incredibly hard to justify picking Spencer off of one performance from a year ago that he has been unable to back up when Meyers is literally four seconds faster in the 1500 this year.
McSweyn has ran faster than Meyers by 0.5 (TM), but his lack of foot speed (2:20 1K SB) makes him less of a threat in Olympic style races, as was demonstrated today. He also already had a 5K slot, in an event he should have focused on and aimed to threaten. Now he runs the 5K with tired legs while the 1500 semis contain 0 Australians.
The suggestions for Ollie to come back to OAC Australia are extremely interesting. Jessie Hunt would make for a good training partner but ideally he needs to do sessions with someone who's better than him. I think there's definitely a honeymoon period for athletes who join OAC in the US - They go through a purple patch when they first respond to Ritz' training. I think Ritz has absolutely cooked it this championships though - All his athletes look a step behind. Would be absolutely amazing for Morgan, Ollie and Ky to all come back and strengthen OAC Aus. Will be interesting to see who Spencer signs with once he graduates. You would have to assume Nike and train with MTC seeing as he's with them whenever he's back home.
I do not want to see Stewy in another 1500 champs race ever again. Not confident on him even making it out of the 5km heats - Particularly if it's slower than 13:20. No kick at all

Why would Olli need to do sessions with someone better than him? That is not the case for nearly all of the worlds top guys besides him:
Hocker / Teare
Kerr / Wynne
Jakob / nobody close
Tim / Keter
Reynold / Nobody close
Komen / Nobody close
Nordas / Nobody close
Wightman / Thomas Keen
Gourley / Ciattei
Kessler / Beadlescomb and Hoppel
Laros / Ermias Girma (occasionally)
The OAC was actually really unusual in having an unclear pecking order.

I think Mottram is too fresh as a coach to label him Rubbish? He has Hollingsworth through to the semis of the 800m, Buckingham in the Steeple. Jesse Hunt is turning into one of our best up and coming 1500/milers and he has Haftu Strintzos running well. I'd say we could see more of Mottram's guys in Aussie kits during the next commonwealth games/WC cycle than MTC athletes.
Awful tactics, all looked completely cooked. All 3 of them should get a lot of heat for this terrible running seeing as Cam Myers didn't go despite qualifying.

It's not good coaching if a squad buying every top Australian talent will end up with a lot of Australian representatives. If anyone believed in his coaching ability, they wouldn't have siloed 5x top Australian 800m women.
Middle distance runner Ollie Hoare has revealed the shocking abuse he's received on social media during the Paris Games, saying he should have deleted Instagram before the event.

It is what it ain't. Inside info on where they will be? My guess is they're defunct, a thing of the past never to seen again.
Craig's already proved himself to be a decent coach and will only get better. We need more ex top level athletes like him to take up paid coaching as a career.
