This clearly never happens. If a program becoming self recruiting happened, Boulder never would have had down years. Even at the height of CU's prominence, CU was not getting top recruiting classes.
Parker Wolfe is from Denver, a 20 minute drive from Boulder, and he STILL chose to go to North Carolina.
Kiki Vaughn, daughter of Sarah Vaughn, a CU alum and legend. she grew up training on the CU campus, yet she chose NAU.
Alot of it is that Wetmore/ CU was always behind the eight ball in identifying/ reaching out to talent. Many times I've heard of kids in colorado being contacted by CU after their big break out performance, but they had been talking to other D1 schools for 6+ months. Many of the kids cite this as a reason they didn't consider CU.
I actually heard Aldo Marquez, who does that extra .05% of the work at NAU. Is next in line for the Assistant job. He was once one of the ex great NAU athletes as well so he knows very well the inner workings of the team there.
RWTB goes into a fair amount of detail with the recruiting by MW and JD. Goucher connected with Mark and thought he would be the best coach to get him to his goals, but Martin Smith (at Wisconsin) was likely the next choice. After that (and the book), he had too much interest from kids wanting to run for him at CU, but that created a different recruiting challenge. Vin Lanana was a phenomenal recruiter (at Stanford), and many kids that CU was interested in chose to go there. The Torres' went to CU even though they didn't get full scholarship offers, but that was a lucky break that tied up funding for other recruits. MW had a lot of success with walk-ons.
In general with college choices, lots of kids want to go out of state if the local school is too familiar or too close to home. (Few kids who grow up in Eugene want to go to the U of O.) Also, lots of kids who get recruited for athletics (any sport) often don't pan out due to all the normal adjustments of being at a new school, working with a new coach/teammates, being away from home, burnout from HS sports, etc.
Taht is a bold faced lie and you should be sued to all high hell. Vaughns have always been trouble makers. How come Sarah hasn't been able to be in or stay in any groups?!
Considering Sara is a full-time working mom of 4, fitting a professional running group into her schedule would be incredibly challenging. That's likely why she isn’t part of a running group in Boulder. Sara is kind and well-liked by many. Let's keep this conversation positive and respectful.
Jarred will be an interesting fit. He is a good guy, but a crazyyy Christian.
Is there a litmus test now that we can't hire Christians? Irish and dogs keep out, eh?
You know, the head coach at my Power 5 Conference school was a practicing Christian. End result: He did his job and was a good role model for us. Also, we were all adults and were OK with meeting a Christian in person.
seems college coaching these days is all about creating a culture where everyone feels welcome
Mike Smith has done a tremendous job with that. He's got international kids who thrive. He's got Americans who thrive. He's got LGBT people who thrive. He's got the men and women both competing at a very high level
so long as you treat everyone with the same level of kindness and respect, who cares what your religious beliefs are?
guessing Cornfield has learned an awful lot about fostering a healthy environment for people from all walks of life during his time coaching under Smith
I generally see Cornfield and Smith sitting together at a lot of NAU soccer games. They seem to get along really well despite Smith seemingly not being very religious (spiritual maybe?) and Cornfield being a Liberty grad. Who cares?
I suspect this won't work out but this is how many not quite elite football and basketball programs get their coaches, assistants from the coaching tree of famous coaches.
Any public announcement coming? I haven't seen one from today.
It’s a joke , Cornfeld is not getting the job. Alums have first hand
it's not Cornfeld, it's Cornfield as in, "someone should take this stupid thread out into a corn field and beat it with baseball bats and bury it alive like at the end of Casino."
