I once did a 20 miler on a treadmill (it was summer in South Florida). The last eight miles or so I plated with increasing pace/ incline. It took me 45 minutes just sitting in the locker room afterwards before I could drag myself into the shower. Thoroughly miserable experience.
As an older runner from an icy climate, you get used to it. I mention my age as slips on ice during workouts get less enjoyable so I do most of my training in the winter indoors. Not to mention the general homicidal tendency of morning drivers in the dark and suddenly afer 20 years of it - I'm too old for this shiit.
The key other than consistency for me is either zwift running and or music. Zwift gives you something to do and treadmills are the only time I listen to music/podcasts (see earlier remark about homicidal drivers). Listening to the Let's Run podcast covers usually one run a week, and high energy stuff for workout days.
I do this for 3-4 months and still usually come out in decent shape for spring. But once the time changes back I don't touch a treadmill for the rest of the year until next January.
