History says the baseline odds of a big war this century are high. On the other hand, "total war", like we saw in the early 20th century, seems far less likely. I don't think we'll see nations shooting off nuclear missiles at one another--it would be too cataclysmic. The next "war" is more likely to be informational and digital in nature and may look unlike anything in the past.
My point is that its really hard to prepare for a war if you don't even know what form it will take. For all we know, we might be at war right now and not even know it!
In the meantime, everyone should keep a 2-month emergency fund as a basic financial precaution (regardless of everything else) and keep investing in their pension / 401k. Inflation runs high during war but stocks (often) outperform due to the economy running hot. And I guess stay up on the news so you can react in an appropriate and timely fashion.
