There was no pacer, there were no pace lights, so her solo effort was a lot harder than the old BTC ‘time trials’. 🙄
Do you guys even run? Go to your local track and run a 5000m time trial solo, and compare that time running in a well-paced race with other athletes to share the lead. How many seconds faster do you think you would be in the latter? Now suppose that solo time trial was done on a hot humid day where the Misery Index was 27 points higher than in the race!
Margot Appleton just registered for the 5000m, knocking Elizabeth Leachman out.
Just noticed that as well.
However, with the close of entries tonight (6/11) midnight, declarations begin and continue through Thursday (6/14) midnight.
So, Friday, we'll know who's racing the Trials and who's not.
Back to the women's 5000.
Had Cranny and Schweizer as "x" factors due to their lack of racing as well as social media updates prior to PTF. No more.
Prior to PTF, was wondering if Schweizer might consider dropping the 5k given she didn't even have a WA ranking in that event. Now, wondering if she might DNS the 10k if she makes the 5k team. She will still declare for both, with the 10k as her safety net.
Now, Andrews and Tuohy have come out of hiding to resume posting on their IG accounts what appear to be some solid training the past few weeks. New "x" factors. They could be in far better shape than we as outsiders might imagine.
I’m not going to make any predictions due to the unknowns already discussed at length, but I’ll just say I watched her entire 30:50 10K, and there’s no question she had more gas in the tank. It just looked too easy for her. She had a pacer to keep her from going too fast. I could easily see her dropping 10-20 seconds in reasonable conditions.
As for the 5K, she broke her own record in 82F heat, 2 days after running the 10K. She might have been able to go sub 14:50 on that day if she pushed it early on. She ran the same time indoors, so I’m guessing she’s capable of knocking close to 10-15 seconds off with ideal conditions in a world class field. If the weather doesn’t allow it, the others will be affected too, and she just demonstrated she can perform in less than ideal conditions.
What really stands out to me is how fresh she looks after crossing the finish line, while the others are exhausted and stumbling around. She’s not giving close to 100% in these races, because she doesn’t need to. She is nowhere close to her ceiling, which is probably still years away.

Yeah Valby has run 14:50's 3 times in the last 6 months. She can go faster.
All the other competitors need to be on notice if it is hot, honestly. I have never seen anyone so immune to the heat. TBS, Olememoi only ran 4 seconds off her own PR at NCAAs, and Hertenstein dropped a huge PR. Maybe the heat was not that much of a factor?
Valby pushing the pace probably had something to do with their PRs, and credit to them for staying with her for as long as they did.
I just think there’s something freakish about Valby’s aerobic capacity, considering she’s able to do this with lower mileage, and without elite top end speed (and making it look easy). I just hope she’s able to choose the right team to unlock all of the potential going forward, because there are clearly things she can improve upon.
Can somebody clarify the acceptance process that USATF uses? In every event, there are runners listed as "not qualified/not accepted" who have significantly faster times than others that are list as "not qualified." These runners did not scratch because if they did, the list would note this.
For example, Taylor Roe has a 5000m time of 15:15.01 from March and she is "not qualified/not accepted" while Katie Camarena has a 15:18.81 from December but is listed as not qualified." Why is Roe "not accepted" while Camarena is accepted? There are people with times in the 15:40s that are not listed as "not accepted."
I guess we should at least be happy that USATF lists the names at all. I'm kind of surprised that they don't keep registration secret until the day before the Trials when they release heat sheets.

as I recall from prior years status fluctuates until end of declaration period.

This will end up being a mini scandal. Usatf is rejecting some entries that did not come from Usatf certified meets. Apparently this requirement for qualifying was poorly communicated to the athletes.

No it is something else. Tuohy's mark is shown "not accepted", but it was in 2023 US Championship.
I posted this on another thread. This seems to explain it.
I looked back at the 2021 Trials website and have some clarification on the "Not Accepted" tag. It looks like those listed as "Not Accepted" have officially declared for the event but are not qualified. Those just listed as "Not Qualified" have not declared yet.
WHAT DOES MY STATUS MEAN?
When you enter: Name of entrant, affiliation - if provided, and entry mark appear in those columns.
After you enter: Each entry mark is verified – leading to a “qualified”, “not qualified” or blank notation in the STATUS column
When you declare: A “declared” (for those qualified) or a “not accepted” (for those not qualified) notation goes in the DECLARATION column
As athletes are brought in to fill the respective field: A “not accepted” notation will be changed to “accepted”

So, for Tuohy, this means she has officially declared for the 5000m but because she doesn't have the Auto standard, she is "Not Qualified/Not Accepted." Those like Abbey Cooper, who is listed only as "Not Qualified," have not declared yet. Once she declares, hers will change to "Not Qualified/Not Accepted."
