Have looked forward to seeing this updated thread since it started.

Now that June 9th has come and gone, have a new suggestion:

Keep updating it regularly for another week -- based up declarations found at USATF.org as well as interviews and social media posts where athletes state which events they will be racing at the Trials. Just as you have with the athletes who are out with injuries.

For example, Kelati is currently only entered in the 10k while O'Keefe/marathon is not entered at all. They can be lined out of your above 5k and 10k lists, respectively.

Also, Emily MacKay stated after yesterday's 1:57 she will only race the 1500 at the Trials, so she can be lined out of your 800 list.

Regarding MacKay, i'm pretty sure she will run the 800m if she did not make the team in the 1500m since the events don't clash at the trials.

Not intending on diverting this thread to a MacKay discussion, but have to clarify the mistake above.

800 comes before 1500. MacKay stated in yesterday's post-race interview she will only race the 1500. Has never run rounds of the 800 before as a pro so does not want to compromise her chances in the 1500.

I'm convinced Parker Valby is a lot faster than her current PR times. she simply hasn't been pushed yet, often runs the final laps alone. plus the first few laps in NCAA races are often jogfests. but being alongside runners like Weini Kelati (10k) and Ellie St. Pierre (5k) will push her beyond her limits. even if she doesn't make the US team (though I think she will in the 10k) expect big PR's.

It is looking more and more likely that Englehardt will get into the 1500m field.

Field size is 36 and 32 runners ahead of her have registered.

However, of those still above her, we have:

First hurdle is the 5000 has rounds, will all the usual suspects make the final?

Inevitably the final is a jogfest with windup last mile and kick. The stars like this, and the wide-eyed newcomers have respect for the stars, so they let it go slow.

This year may be different with Valby. Her best chance to qualify is a high quality fast race, and most importantly she feels comfortable out front. No one is going to pull Valby along, but perhaps she runs quicker with a group tight on her tail. St Pierre, Cranny, Schweitzer, Kelati and Valby will probably all be together with 1600 to go, along with some surprise like Nicols, Lipari or Tuohy. Then we just see who can bring it home.

Young Agathe Kaune from Estonia front ran her way to the world final 5000 last year. Can Valby front run her way to team USA. With the right weather she could take it just under 14:40. Will be entertaining.

Cranny and Schweizer would like to point out to Valby how she's welcome to front run because they ran down frontrunner Sifan Hassan last weekend after she gapped the field. Hassan is probably still a world class 1500m runner if she wanted to be and still won in a kick.

I don't think Valby is. Any speculation of Valby being able to go faster with better competition is no different from suggesting Cranny, Schweizer, Henes, etc. are training through the portland track fest or other spring races in an olympic year and what we've seen is only the tip of the sword. Historically, NB Boston performs well early in the season (see ESP and McKay already having big races), BTC might have a mini peak inside or at the Ten, but then really sharpens nicely heading into the trials. Mike Smith also knows how to time a peak. All this really just muddies the clarity and suggests everyone will have to perform on the day, spots aren't guaranteed for anyone. Cranny, Schweizer, and ESP have all missed teams in recent years we thought they'd definitely make.

Schweizer did not overtake Hissan. We watched the race. And the hay is in the barn. There is no more fitness to be gained. Valby’s race is a race of fitness.

Say what you want about Valby's fitness, but Schweizer has run faster many times. Why do you want to live in the past? Just look at the fitness displayed in the present. Do you have any idea on the difference in performance when running a 5k in 82deg sun versus 62deg when the sun is closer to the horizon?!?

There is no ‘sharpening’ for a fast 5k taken to the limits of fitness. Speed work at this point would only make things worse in that outcome. Unless you are talking about ‘sharpening’ diet and chemistry.

Why do you want to live in the past? Just look at the fitness displayed in the present. Do you have any idea on the difference in performance when running a 5k in 82deg sun versus 62deg when the sun is closer to the horizon?!?

Not to mention running the 82dreg race solo, versus being pulled by pros in a 60deg race.

This year may be different with Valby. Her best chance to qualify is a high quality fast race, and most importantly she feels comfortable out front. Young Agathe Kaune from Estonia front ran her way to the world final 5000 last year. Can Valby front run her way to team USA. With the right weather she could take it just under 14:40. Will be entertaining.
Cranny and Schweizer would like to point out to Valby how she's welcome to front run because they ran down frontrunner Sifan Hassan last weekend after she gapped the field. Hassan is probably still a world class 1500m runner if she wanted to be and still won in a kick.
I don't think Valby is. Any speculation of Valby being able to go faster with better competition is no different from suggesting Cranny, Schweizer, Henes, etc. are training through the portland track fest or other spring races in an olympic year and what we've seen is only the tip of the sword. Historically, NB Boston performs well early in the season (see ESP and McKay already having big races), BTC might have a mini peak inside or at the Ten, but then really sharpens nicely heading into the trials. Mike Smith also knows how to time a peak. All this really just muddies the clarity and suggests everyone will have to perform on the day, spots aren't guaranteed for anyone. Cranny, Schweizer, and ESP have all missed teams in recent years we thought they'd definitely make.

It will be interesting to see how ESP does against Wiley and the other 1500m runners, after ESP has to run a 5000m prelim, then get taken to the wall by Valby in the 5000m final.

Or more like thr Cranny and Schweizer cheerleaders don’t want to acknowledge that reality.
