i dont want the rule to change but you do have a point. The start is toes behind the start line, but you can have your torso over the start line. so your torso is not doing the 1500m 😱 but your toes definitely are. ;-)
Bugger, now you've put the cat amongst the pigeons, there should be a rule change to make sure this doesn't happen, 1500m should be 1500m.
the solution to this dirty diving by Jakob and others is to make their torso cross the line above a certain height. As if there was finishing tape there.
The photo finish can indicate the height I think 1.3m is a fair enough minimum height for male runners.
I never actually checked, but finishing tape probably originated to see who won in close races. If there was any doubt, you could check which spot the tape was broken at. And obviously you can't break the tape by diving under it.
This reminds me of the good ol' days when the430miler would take every opportunity to show photos of Geb and Tergat crossing the line in the 2000 Olympic 10k that supposedly "proved" that Tergat had won. Good times!

Granted. I clearly mixed up 100 and 1500 in my post. The 1500 rules seem to allow running slightly less than 1500.
In my opinion, Cheruiyot won. Jakobs' head fell across the line first, but Cheruiyot got his full body across the line before Jakob. The lower half of Jakobs' legs were not across the line before Cheruiyot was completely across. Why is it like this in track and field? Is it the first to "touch" the line who wins? Why is it in other sports the ball must completely cross the line before a point is scored? I think this is something that needs serious consideration. And if you would like to see for yourself, skip to 6:41 and play in 0.25x speed. Tell me what you think.

It was only a Diamond league, and I think the former champ all in all was pleased with his race and progress. And maybe even he thought Jakob’s childish dive was fun and startling. And maybe an earned win after all the front running…
