This is true, but they could have hosted somewhere in Europe like ethiopia does and they would achieve the same thing without requiring their athletes to fly halfway across the world and a completely different time Zone
Like where? 10,000s are rarely run in meets nowadays. And it would have to be a 10,000 now before the qualifying window closes.
Why does everyone keep talking about the heat? The average high in Paris is only 78 degrees in August. A high of 85 would be a hot day for them. I have a feeling they're not going to schedule the 10,000m for 2pm. It'll be when the sun is down and it'll be in the 70's, maybe even high 60's. I wouldn't say that's too hot for a 10,000m race.
Exactly. Call me chauvanistic or jingoistic or whatever. But why are we using a high profile domestic race to host the Kenyan Olympic qualifier? And it is not as if Kenyan athletics has a record of integrity that makes the results remotely interesting.
who's we? it's a nike sponsored diamond league meet not the us trials.
they always have great distance fields full of africans, weird to complain that this year there will be even more top athletes there
This answered the question I had while reading through the thread. I was confused on the matter. Are we, the US, hosting another country’s Olympic trials?
Or is a separate business entity hosting a track meet where an outside nation is having its top runners compete in an already planned event?
Seems to be the latter which is indeed not an issue.
Dumb take by Lyles. If he did research, he’d know about the effects of altitude, as well as the complicated nature of 10K qualifying. Right now we are hosting our own 10K trials where because it’ll be run in the heat and with no pacers we might end out setting our B (Henes) or C type (Hurley) options. Or we might send only 2 athletes.
Kenyas notice was too short, but otherwise they will send a team in a meritocratic, thought-out way. And Ebenyo sorted it out, so out-of-date take too.
Lyles posted his tweet yesterday, May 22. The news that Ebenyo was able to get a visa didn’t come out until after Lyles’ tweet. It looks like the only out-of-date person is the letsrun OP, our “benevolent dictator.”
The quote in this thread’s title is a partial one that was taken out of context, undoubtedly for clicks and engagement. Lyles was responding to a tweet regarding Ebenyo’s inability to get a visa at that time. Lyles made a good point about the visa issues with World Championships when Eugene hosted in 2022, and he also added a thoughtful point about Kenyans not being able to watch their country’s Olympic qualifier in person.
Here is his full tweet:
“Why in the world are we hosting another countries Olympic qualifier. We should know how much of an issue this is after worlds 22. Also their country won’t be able so see their athletes make the team in person.”

I thought he tweeted at 7pm not 7am. So my apologies on that critique. I respect Noah's empathy for Simiyu Ebenyo of course. I think the not being able to see their athletes part is misguided as most of these athletes will compete at Trials in the 5000 AND wouldn't it be worse to see the athletes not make it to Paris because of the 10,000 World Rankings/Points red tape?
This is a fair move by AK to allow guys without the standard an opportunity to hit it at the Trials and race at Sea Level like the Olympics. It is better thought-out and considerate to a good chunk of the field than he is giving it credit for.
I understand the confusion, but it literally has nothing to do with him in anyway. Their race isn't negatively impacting any aspect of his own as it happens way before his race, if anything, it may raise interest in the event overall since there will now be 2 additional world class races happening.
Now if they were instead doing their 100m trials here and bumping around his own race start time, or putting him in a heat with like 5-6 Kenyan guys with 0 shot of winning or even just making him run heats in general to make Pre Finals, he'd be justified in questioning Pre organizer's actions.
What race is Lyles running at Pre? I don’t think he’s been mentioned.
If this is about Kenya, rather than Ethiopia, this time, the same applies. They could run, for instance, in Mombasa along the Indian Ocean.
"The lowest point in Kenya is on the Indian Ocean at 0° while the highest point is on Mt. Kenya which is 5,199 meters above Sea level. Kenya is located in the East African region of Africa."
Sea level areas in Ethiopia and Kenya are very hot and humid. Nasty conditions.
You mean like Paris will be? This is a Nike decision. Kenya already holds a track trials. This was a way for Nike to control the federation. Hilarious no one sees that.

Your post just proves people will see what they want to see.
Your post is just flat out fake news.
I gave a partial quote because I have limited space in the subject line. I don't have room to quote all 3 sentences so I quoted the first one and then linked to his tweet right below it. It's a shame twitter's API no longer puts the tweets on the messageboard but I pretty much did the opposite of what you said I did.
He makes a good point. We are competing against Kenya in the Olympics. They are our opponents. Why help them? Let them conduct their trials in their own country.

wtf are you all talking about? pre is not hosting the kenya trials. nike is hosting the team nike (kenya) olympic trials. it's that simple.
If you did your research, you'd know that Ethiopia has low altitude places to run but this approach gets maximum participation from the athletes because it means that they don't miss lucrative opportunities to run on the circuit in order to fly back to their country during the prime season. The answer would be to have the IAAF block out a section of the season from pro meets for national trials, just as they block out the championship period every year.
"Its lowest point, the Danakil Depression is 125 meters below sea level while its highest elevation, the Ras Dashen is 4,620 meters above sea level."
Which races "on the circuit" are next and close to Eugene, OR? Your idea is right if they held them in Europe in two weeks, as the next three Diamond League races are there.
I don't see anything wrong per se with holding their Trials at Pre, for the fans, for me or you, or for Lyles. It's been done before, fairly recently. Apparently Lyles wasn't following track then. I just don't see any benefit to the athletes for the timing or location this year. Especially when the Ethiopian Trials is well established at Hengelo.
