Do any of you aspire to anything in your lives? Do you ever dream of bigger things? Hell even in running I guarantee you every single person sh*tting on him has had thoughts in their mind going into a training cycle of what they could be that was well beyond what they were currently at.
Yes, it's important to believe you are faster than you actually are as long as this does not result in poor training and racing strategy. Perhaps a good way to describe it is that you should strongly believe in your *capacity* to achieve any given fitness level.
Racing as if you are faster than you actually are, equals a big positive split.

I agree! Doesn't look like you read the full text of my comment.
That's like saying Nordas is a 1:58 800 runner as that's his official PR
The difference is that sprout has run a bunch of races this year and none of them suggest anything close to 27:00. If he ran a 7:32, nobody would care about his 5000m. Or was like 2 strides back of blanks in XC. And so on. instead we got a steady stream of results suggesting he is a 13:30/28:00 type guy right now…

Kind of looks like you contradicted yourself, but no matter.
I did not. I'm surprised you don't see where I'm coming from given your username and Sean Brosnan's approach to creating self-belief in his athletes.
The mind of a distance runner should always be slightly over-optimistic as long as this does not result in poor racing and training strategy. It is possible to believe you are faster than your fitness shows while also racing and training smart, and this belief will help a lot during that golden moment in a race when you can feel that today is your day. It will also help on your worst days, as this type of self-belief makes you mentally tougher and more resilient.

I don’t know why you’re dragging this out. This thread is about someone who appeared to be in about 28:00 shape shooting for 27:00, and that is not being “slightly” over optimistic.
As for me using a popular and humorous quote as a handle, it does not necessarily mean I agree with it. I did run competitively in HS and College. There were many times I optimistically tried to keep up with better runners and it almost always turned out badly.
Good lord for the last time, he was trying to run 27:45, not 27:00.
The title of this thread refers to him attempting 27:00 and that’s what posters have been responding to. Sprout shooting for 27:45, wouldn’t have resulted in a thread.

lol that's because the thread title was wrong, kid! you guys can "respond" to whatever you want, but if it's intended to be about what Cole Sprout actually said, he said he was aiming for 27:45. Feel free to have your hypothetical conversation about how delusional he'd be if he went for 27:00 though, and whether he's going to really fall off that pace (that he never intended to run nor said he was going to run).

So why didn’t someone point this out as poster #2, and nip this thing at the bud?

They pointed it out in Post #16, and periodically thereafter as you all just continued arguing your hypothetical. FWIW, the pacer was also tasked with running 27:45 pace at that meet.
lol imagine being cole sprout, giving a normal enough interview stating you're going to try to run 27:45 (PR is 27:42), then a bunch of LR posters go down a rabbit hole talking about how silly you are for a statement you never made.

Sound running didn’t help. The wording was really confusing on Instagram. “Cole Sprout is eyeing that Paris 10,000m standard next weekend at the Track Fest”. Should’ve said Olympic trials standard instead. I was also confused because there’s no way he thought he was in 27:00 shape. 27:45 is a pretty reasonable time for him. Guy doesn’t deserve the flack
