No one wants to go to dumb**** Eugene. Only American runners have some idea of it as a "running Mecca." I don't think people from other countries even know or care who Pre was. The Oregon Country Fair gets that kind of attendance every year. The fetch stretches all the way from Seattle, down to northern California. There are no billionaires behind the OCF -- just a bunch of hippies doing what hippies have been doing for 60 years.
You can't even get the locals to attend track meets. Those days are long gone. Remember when Nike was lobbying to get Prefontaine list as a Diamond League event? Nike brought in 20-30 busloads of Nike employees from Portland to give the appearance of interest in the meet.

I'm from the US as well. I live on the East Coast and you couldn't pay me to go to Eugene. Worlds in Eugene was the first one I skipped since 2007.
Before the George Floyd police reforms, Nike Beaverton was able to lie and BS us through their alleged fake marketing fan bois at Flotrack, Register-Guard, Milesplit, T&F News, TFRRS, TAFWA, Runnerspaces, Citius, Magic Hayward, Oregonian, Runners World, etc. Since then we've learned the facts about NIke via Tik Tok, Youtube, Discord, Instagram, X, and so on.
The DL had a meet held in NYC (20+ million) for about 5 years. How was the attendance? In 2016 it was replaced by Rabat.
Again this is a silly argument. The meet still exists as a gold level meet and sells out the home stretch grandstand at higher prices than other DL meets. But the stadium is small, so you have to put up temporary bleachers (worse seats/sun/uncomfortable) if you want to have a large crowd. They don’t bother with this any more. And it’s not in NYC it’s in Randall’s Island a highly inconvenient place to get to for New Yorkers (who primarily don’t have cars). The meet draws solidly given these factors but it is in the correct spot given its location and venue limitations.

The Chinese government has a vested interest in filling the stands at sporting events and can cover the cost of paying people to go. It's like the Beijing half marathon. It's all theater to sports-wash a country with a questionable human rights record.

One theory I was wondering about while watching the meet is, "Does your social credit score get bumped up if you go to the meet?" I think in China you get ranked for doing 'good' things and 'bad thigs.' Like people in debt can't ride certain trains.

that credit score system is not in nation wide use, i live here and don't know a single person who has a social score. I've lived here for quite a few years (and in several other asian countries) and it isn't as remotely "Orwellian" as some of you want to believe. People here, for the most part, live pretty normal lives.
DL refused Tokyo and Mt Sac many times who demanded they use local Timing, TV, ITOs, web masters, Stats, etc. instead of flying in the DL's people from the UK. China demanded the same and won. Seb Coe would have had to pay his own airfare and hotel room in China, instead Seb Coe did NOT show up in China.

This is a clarification with little practical purpose. It is inconvenient and hard to get to. And yet people have made it there fine for this meet and it sells out at twice the average price of DL meets. The stadium is not of DL-desired size, that is why it failed as a DL meet. It’d be nice to see a facility actually in a good urban location get a crack, but as far as I know there are few candidates in the US.
