Melanie True, Valentina Fakrogha, Aelo Curtis and Sadie Engelhardt lifted Ventura High from California to a national high school outdoor record of 11:21.85 in the girls distance medley relay at the 64th Mt. SAC Relays Present...
So Tuohy’s record is gone? I don’t have the numbers in front of me.
Yes.
Katelyn's 4:33.87 -- from her HS sophomore year five years ago -- has finally been laid to rest.
This doesn't need to turn into a p*ssing contest. Tuohy's run from 2018 (6 years ago) was great, and so is this one. Similar (lack of) competition. Tuohy has publicly congratulated Sadie. Sadie definitely has more speed as a hs runner than Tuohy did.
She certainly was gunning for the absolute HSR with her opening quarter of 65.90! Gutsy runner, she now sits #3 all time behind only Addy Wiley's 4:27.71 converted 1600m and Mary Cain's indoor 4:28.21. And she's a HS Junior.
Mary Cain ran 4:24 indoors in high school as a senior. 4:28 was from her junior year...still a ways to go to get the real high school record.
What is the 4 x mile high school record? I would have to think Ventura would have a shot at it if they have 3 other girls under 5.
Cuthbertson (NC) ran 19:22 indoors a few months ago for the record
It would be an interesting race but not sure if they are quite that level yet. Cuthbertson actually had (and still has) three girls who can run sub 4:50 (one sub 4:40) and another just under 5. Ventura has 4:57/4:59/4:52 (assuming Sax can get back to her sophomore form) and Engelhardt. So Sadie would be in a position where she would have to chase down a very fast Charlotte Bell (4:37) from like 100 meters or more. Not sure even she could do that.
Gotta admit, I'm not a big fan of Engelhardt. She's a well-trained and highly-conditioned athlete, but not so talented. I think she'll gain weight, lose form, and slow down. That's what's happened to the girl who still holds the 1500m high school record, and I predicted the same thing for her. Engelhardt has no ability to switch gears and sprint. She just developed early and has more aerobic capacity than her competition at this point. Her advantages will disappear after high school.

For sure. Tuohy was good but several are better. Cain was much better. Decker was much better. Tuohy would be just another good runner finishing 2nd or 3rd in high school races today.

It sounds kind of mean but it makes sense. The history shows the top 1500m girls die out. Sadie looks 26 and before we get excited about these performances she has another year in HS. We’ve seen how this story ends with females

Girls changing during puberty is always a possibility, and many fast girls have slowed due to it. But she's a junior now. My impression is that the changes affecting girls occur mostly during their sophomore year.

Usually you see it the worst senior year in HS freshman in college. She doesn’t have history on her side and she’s severely over raced.

Very hard to predict. See makayla paige who I have mentioned elsewhere. Very good as hs sophomore, leveled out, regressed and now sub 2;01. If the talent is there it should eventually show.

Sadie has no bounce and a poor stride already and has now or almost no leg lift. I say her freshman year at NC State we will be saying what used to be.
