Running vs cycling vs swimming

My wife apparently was known as 'the town bike' where she came from, but I haven't seen her saddle up in all the time I've known her. - and she can't be muzzled, but is blinkered.

SWIMMING - I am a life-long sports fan, Track and field is #1 ...love the Olympics and love world-class swimming. ...really like in athletics...how you can get to see 8 or so champions go head to head in the ONE race or event. Same with swimming. ...and both have that thrilling bonus of possible world records. ...anyway, my point is...despite my experience and knowledge of sport...I am yet to understand how swimmers KEEP breaking world records...and often by huge margins. (super-suits aside) ...like, were East Germans way ahead in their time because of drugs, but ultimately really poorly trained compared to modern training ?? - or are all top swimmers in present day on drugs and better drugs than the 1980's etc ?? ...or are more talented homosapiens being born now, in such a short period...? BTW - seriously, use Lidar to measure and introduce 'the bomb' in to diving. - no one can tell me that would not be the most watched event in Paris. I mean it.

Least appeal-swimming. When you are competing others only see your backside as you are primarily face down partially submerged. Your hair and eyes are hidden by a swim cap and goggles. Everyone looks alien. You train long hours going back and forth in a pool in your own little world. No one can see your face so no one knows who you are. It's hard to be an individual and express yourself. Few believe your activity is cool and you will not make much money.

Mid appeal-bicycling. Everyone wears a helmet with sunglasses and so no one sees your face and knows what you look like. Everyone looks alien. You wear the same kit as your team so its hard to stand out as an individual. You can't express yourself with hair, nails, jewelry because it would not be aero and would slow you down. When you compete as a cyclist you go by so fast that it's hard to identify you. You can make lots of money and ride fast, but it's dangerous and you will crash and become injured. It can be frustrating when people are more interested in the tech of the bike you ride than they are in you.

Most appealing-running. Your face, body, hair, nails, makeup are totally visible to all when racing and training. You get to show off your athletic body wearing as little as possible. People can see and recognize you because you are not moving that fast and are either running around on a track in a stadium or out on public roads. You can express yourself as an individual and some of the fastest runners in the world compete wearing elaborate jewelry, wigs, long nails and make-up. But your activity is not that cool and you will only make a little money.

Pidcock didn't run a 13:25 5k. He claimed he ran a 13:25 5k on a small loop course during the middle of a 7 mile run. Garmin watches are notorious for overestimating pace on loop courses. A reasonable analysis of his Strava data suggested something like 16:07 for his fastest 5k but even that was just a guess.

I was a runner for 45 years. Every Olympics I would shout "For the love of god, swimming - please be over. Let the real sport begin."

Then in 2019 I quit running and became a swimmer.

Since Tokyo I've been enthralled with watching swimming. And now I think swimming is the coolest thing to do, for a variety of reasons.
