Then why did she even start the race. Don’t believe it for a second. Lots of naive people here.
And if Monson had travelled all the way to Southern California, showed up at the meet, warmed up, and then didn't feel good enough to race, one of you dummies would post something like "She went all the way to the meet and then she didn't even give it a shot?"
Some of you just like to think negative and complain about everything.
Sometimes people get sick and they can't perform as well as they would like. That's all there is to it.

This forum is filled with losers and haters and it's why so many of the athletes avoid this place. There's no need for them to read the toxicity being spewed by the chuckleheads that populate this forum. The typical idiots spewing the crap are the ones that have been losers their entire lives and have never achieved anything. Spewing hateful drivel here is the only thing that they can do to, in some weird and perverted way, feel good about themselves.

I can only remember ONE thread in Letsrun history where an athlete ran a great race and got zero downvotes. (I won't say who the athlete or race was, because then some knuckleheads will go and downvote the posts in that thread.)
Nico Young ran great? Haters - He's gay.
Grant Fisher ran great? Hater's - He didn't help with the pacing.
Alicia Monson tried to break the American Record? Haters - She got sick and quit.
Haters gonna hate. What a miserable way to live life.
I tried one time in all the years. A half a banana and just a spoonful or two of cereal. By the time I got to the finish line my legs were completely covered and the “ stuff” was in my shoes.. just an awful experience.
The worst thing though at the finish line, they had volunteers , “ brownies” taking the tags ( a long time ago) it was awfully embarrassing. I was always fascinated after reading biographies like Ron Hill’s two volume and the book about Buddy Edelen and the breakfasts they’d get up and eat before a race. I couldn’t eat anything…and an evening race really was a problem to fuel properly

I wonder if there was something in the water there? the person I went with threw up horribly in the car while driving us home from the TEN.
I didn't have any affects but I also didn't drink from a fountain or anything when I was there.
^This. If I were a professionally paid athlete, probably everything (fluid and food) I ingested in a pre-race window would need to be accounted for. Logistically, that would increase the hassle when traveling to a foreign country to race.

She did look distressed after she stepped off the track and walked pointedly past the bleachers. Def in the direction of the restrooms.
I was thinking about this earlier - Klecker doesn't have any other option to get to the OLY 10,000 right? He's not running the standard at US trials, so it's Highgate, try the 5000 (which wont end well), or try it somewhere on the road
I'm sure there'll be some other options. They could try a 10k road race. Highgate is a great event, but as ever with the UK, the weather is an issue. This is a country where a 10 mph wind is considered "still conditions."
Have you ever been to this event? The conditions are literally always perfect because of the time of year they pick + the protection (from wind) the track gets from the hill. The only time it was less than perfect was 2 years ago when it got to 80*F but that was for the 31-30min guys in the 3pm-5pm races, by the time the Elites stepped on the track late in the evening it was perfect again
Right. But it was already in the works BEFORE she stepped on the line. Unless there was a major miracle and it happened exactly while she was racing. So, sorry- but thats not how a bug works.
ah ok so your argument is, don't even try if you're not 100 percent? hope you're not a coach
I hope you’re not a coach. If someone is vomitong and has diarrhea and clearly a stomach bug the day of a race why would a coach want his athlete to race in a 10k. Running makes everything worse. You’re not very bright.

Plus, many times when your feeling a bit under the weather for some reason, you do not know how badly it will affect you until you step out there and give it a shot. Based on how she was looking (and I can't tell anything for sure) I think that Monson certainly did the right thing attempting the race but also the right thing in dropping out when it became obvious to her that this was just not going to work today. Runners often just don't know until they give it a try.

Did Monson specifically say that she was vomiting and had diarrhea? Or you just took her saying that she was having stomach problems and exaggerated it?

A stomach bug is one or both - diarrhea and/or nausea and vomiting. Those are the symptoms of a stomach bug. Did SHE exaggerate it? Maybe. Maybe nerves got the best of her

There's absolutely zero evidence that she experienced either of these symptoms PRIOR to the race. Maybe her stomach felt a bit off, but you never know if/when these things will pass. I'm not sure why people are trying to make a big controversy out of nothing. I can understand the disappointment at not getting to see her rip a sub-30.

So with your logic the proposed stomach bug that she said she had “suddenly” came on during the race?? Surely you jest. It’s not a sudden phenomenon. She was sick before the race and everyone knows running just makes everything worse. It was her decision and she gets to live with it. nit like she’s an Olympic medal contender. This was just a small meet.
