The Browns are named after the family that founded the team.
As Alan said, 76ers are name because of where & when the Declaration of Independence was signed.
In other news, and for tomorrow’s Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs are changing their name to the 70s & the San Francisco 49ers are changing their name to the 80s.
Stupid thread.
I’m well aware of the history of their terrible name. What else would it have been named after.
Hard to know with so many stupid focks on this forum. For all that I know, you’re another one of them.
Never understood where the 76ers name came from. Then I realized that 76 is the main highway that runs through Philly. They literally named their team after a highway. Is there a dumber team name in existence?
Good thing you didn't post your real name. You would be banned from a job. There isn't a dumber person in existence.

Not to mention it’s the worst highway in America. The Schuylkill Expressway more like the Surekill Expressway. Needs more repairs and maintenance than Embiid.
The Phillies, proof that Philadelphia is either the dumbest or least imaginative city
I don't think you understand the play on words.
Please explain it to me.
"According to MLB Al Reach who was the original owner of the franchise decided on the name Phillies in 1883 due to the fact it tells people who and where they are from since it's short for Philadelphia"

I did a little research. 76 was assigned as an interstate number in 1964 to the entire PA Turnpike from Ohio to NJ. There were a couple of other numbers available in the 70s and 80s, but the PA team saw the nice symmetry with 76 and the Keystone colony and made that request. The 76 was not, however, seen as any huge idea at the time, and PA would have happily settled on a backup number.
The Philadelphia 76ers were named ironically in 1963. The original Philadelphia Warriors moved to San Francisco - today's Golden State franchise. The Syracuse Nationals then moved to Philly and changed name to 76ers.
A contest was held to decide on a new name for the team. The winning name, chosen by Walter Stalberg, was the "76ers".[13][1] The name comes from the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia in 1776, although "Sixers" was also utilized for shorter referencing.[14] The shorter name was quickly accepted by the team for marketing purposes, and for most of the last half-century "76ers" and "Sixers" have been officially interchangeable.
