But...Norwegians are not Americans and they fundamentally misunderstand a lot about our culture. I knew a Scandanavian a while back who tried to convince me that a the reason we pay taxes is to redistribute wealth. That's why *they* pay taxes, and their taxes are much higher than ours.

Norwegians like to pretend they have moral high ground on Americans even though all their wealth comes from oil. Don't get me wrong, it's a great society if you're born into it as a white Norwegian, but there's no Statue of Liberty in the Oslo harbor. They take care of their own, and they keep the "riff raff" out, all the while looking down their noses at America, where anybody can make it with hard work and a bit of luck. Just take a look at the Olympic teams these two countries parade out in August. Would that we could all be so blessed as Jakob. Can't be too hard to make it to the Olympics when every material thing is taken care of for every Norwegian from birth due to the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund made of trillions of dollars of oil money. Of course worrying about money is "very American" for Jakob. Very crude and common to care about putting bread on the table.

I’ve got to say my respect for him just went up. It says something about his competitive mindset, seems he does what he does JUST for the glory. It goes some way to show why he’s had the success he’s so far had. He’d still be out there doing it for considerably less than he currently makes.

Yes, Runners train hard but audiences in the end determine the pay rate, we lack any capacity to pull in the same numbers as basketball, baseball, soccer, football, etc, etc.. No one in Scandinavia worry about our childrens education or the access to health care. We are happy to pay our taxes and get something from it.

Every nation has taxes, bud. The reason your country is rich is oil money. Don't pretend it's because you have some enlightened society that shares for the common good. We can just look to Norway's attitude towards immigrants to see that's not true.
