Addison Ritzenhein, a sophomore at Niwot High in Colorado and the Nike Cross Nationals champion, discusses being presented the Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Player of the Year award by three-time NXN winner Katelyn Tu...
She isn't in high school anymore. She is an adult on a contract. She gets compared to other pros.
Yes, but with an acknowledgment that she is a brand new pro, who is thus less developed and experienced than her competitors. In other sports they call them rookies, and they have awards and keep special records for them.
Touhy compares quite well to US pros when they first came out of college. She has faster times than Cranny, Monson, etc. We will have to see if she can develop as well as they did. She does not compare that well to international pros her age, and she will have a hard time winning a global medal. But this is true for all US distance runners.
Tuohy made a mistake staying with Henes and staying at NC State. She should have moved to altitude and trained with Smith or a real pro group.
Henes is a great college cross country coach but that is it. Her runners don't seem to progress past a certain level. They also don't do double thresholds or lactate training from what has been posted here.
No she doesn't compare well at all. Women like Monson, Schweizer, Coburn, and Frerichs were improving by minutes in college. 90% of Elite American females came up through that path. Tuohy is like Cain or Effraimson.

so far she seems more like Cranny, Seidel or Kelati who were successful in hs, then more so in college

The vast majority of professional runners spent 4 years in college, but for Tuohy it was a mistake to stay for three and a half?
That a coach is good for XC, and not track, is a new one. Can you outline what’s wrong with Henes’ approach to track? It seemed to be working when Tuohy ran 8:35.
There’s no proof that double thresholds, or lactate training, make any difference.
If you ask me Valby broke Tuohy and made her realize she doesn't have the talent to keep improving and compete on an international and even national level as a pro.
Which is fine, busts happen all the time across all sports like top draft picks fizzling out as a pro.

She's going to start doing some altitude stints this year. Also, I'd be shocked if she stays with Henes beyond 2024. My guess is that heading into an Olympic year she didn't want to rock the boat too much and have to adapt to a whole new training system. Better to keep things somewhat stable and then make a bigger change this coming fall.

ha ha, but then if I asked you what 1 + 1 equals I think I'd get a blank stare!

No. It’s been concluded during previous discussions that Tuohy and Chmiel are not smart enough to get admission into Stanford. Life is not always fair. Not everyone can be as smart as Dr. Claudia Gay.
Idk I feel like Tuohy is Letsruns golden child that is never to be spoken of in a negative nor pessimistic light and can do absolutely no wrong.
Absolutely not a Tuohy hater, fan actually, but there is an oddly large amount of posters that take the above sentiment wayyyy too far in a way that’s super weird and would make Katelynn herself really uncomfortable i’d guess.
I understand what you're saying but a lot of the threads are not constructive criticism. Some of the comments that are made, and threads that are started, are done so with the intent of trolling and are just mean-spirited in nature. There's a difference.

Perfect post. LR has a huge population of mean spirited sociopath losers who develop very large p#nises when posting anon on the MB. The are nothing but losers and probably 75% of the traffic here is not constructive, irrelevant to the topic, or even generally acceptable in society. The Brojos hide behind a 1st Amendment argument all while the quality and credibility and value of the site declines and it is now more tabloid than anything else. I am not an important or special person but I have enormous info to share on training others successfully at the mid to lower high level. (not elite). I don't even bother to post because I don't want to deal with anon jackwagon mean spirited losers hiding behind anon curtains. They do ad hom attacks and really never took a first level logic class. Shame really. The enterprise value and multiples of LR are far lower than they should be. If it was quality content on the MB, LR would have sold already.
PS Thank you Mr. Gault for some great content. Thank you some posters with infinite wisdom on training nuances and the sport. You have taught me much and I am humbled.

I'll await the replies proving my points...
You wanted a reply so here it is. What a stupid, moronic post! You must, ah... wait a minute. Actually I agree with you 100%. Your right! I just wanted to not disappoint by not saying something pathetic. Never mind.
I think the larger issue isn’t so much the developing athlete themselves, but rather the American psyche and structure that they are slave to in terms of aspiration and grading of accomplishment.
Americans are very Nationalistic and inwards looking. In terms of sport it could be said that they exist and develop within a vacuum. Everything is structured towards a step programme in High school, University and then pro. I believe this encourages athletes to aim lower than those from other nations. - Ethiopians use their National system as a means to an end, with the ultimate target being world domination. I don’t feel that the USA system encourages the confidence and mental strength required for global success.
I think a lot of people are reading into this from both extremes.
Nobody really knows.
Yes, she is on a downtrend. She closed out her season in disappointing fashion, failed to recover her abilities even after a few month's break, and has shown she previously had a big setback transitioning from HS to college.
That said, she is the only runner I know of that went from a HS phenom, to completely out of the game, to breaking records in college.
