Great video, these guys are super-fit (AR Half shape, and I wonder if Mantz could push sub-59). Obviously the marathon is a different beast, but these guys have to be the chalk picks with Fauble as well.
I like Mantz and Young but I wonder if Fauble is a one trick pony (7th in Boston in 2:09 being the trick).
He does have a sub-2:10 (2:09:42) in the Marathon Project presumably with not good Hoka supershoes. And then the NYC Marathon in 2:12:28 in 2018 with even worse shoes. I'd say those are on par with all but Rupp's best (obviously) and Mantz or Young's best as 2:08 mid-high type equivalent performances (in a fast course with the best shoes).
His Boston results are undoubtedly his most impressive achievements, and I think some skepticism is fair because this course won't be as much about experience or "running smart," which seem to be two Fauble hallmarks in unpaced races.
It's Provo, Utah or at least the general area. For one thing here, Mantz and Young's coach Ed Eyestone is also the BYU coach. So if they did a camp in Kenya, they would have to be coached remotely. As the video shows nicely, he definitely is a guy who likes to feel out how workouts are going, give and receive feedback, and adjust on the fly. For another, a trip to Kenya obviously is a major lifestyle change and a very long trip from the West-Coast or Mountain Region. I can see the pros and cons, but for most US pros who live at altitude the cons outweight the lack of winter weather.
That’s just the way Coach Eyestone is. He’s a very calculated and planned type man. He’s got lots of experience- personally as well as a coach, and his athlete’s performances reflect that. Mantz and Young look super fit. From the vid, you can also hear that it’s the same workout they did before Chicago. Unfortunately, Wardy didn’t look all that great; but it sounds like he’s nursing a hamstring. Mantz is coughing a bit more than seems healthy. Hope they haven’t left their Trials race on a 3 mile loop in Provo.
Many, many, many coaches leave kids home from races because of extreme overtraining workouts like this one. Talk to Arthur Lydiard and start adopting his techniques which are still used by the Ethiopians today!
You would think they would run this on a course with no traffic. Don’t they have running paths where they are?
Having lived in Utah, this is often the best you ge. It's similar throughout the state. If you find paved rural areas it can be better—but then you must drive a bit and the snow will be worse and cleared less frequently.
Although there are surprisingly little "running paths", there are many riverwalks throughout the state—they are nice for jogging but don't make for great running at paces under 7 minutes, let alone 4:40s.
I assume Gordon Mack has started his own company? Looking forward to seeing his future videos. Some of the previews/shorts on his YouTube page are excellent. Meanwhile, his former employer dropped this workout video with Mantz, Young, and Montanez.

Yeah, same thought. Hopefully he and Ed know what he's capable of and when he should dial it back. I had wondered if Ed would reel him in and tell him to slow down throughout that last rep, but he seemed encouraging even when he knew Mantz was clicking off 4:30s. Maybe he's confident it's a comfortable enough pace for Mantz with enough time to recover for the trials.
If you follow them on Strava you can start to see a trend - many workouts that they say are supposed to be marathon pace where they go significantly faster than actual marathon pace
I love everyone critiquing the coaching and choice of workout like they know how to train a good marathoner. Y'all pretending like Mantz and Young weren't the only two American's to give USA marathon bids. I think that alone should speak enough about their workouts being perfect for marathon training.
He's their coach because he doesn't do mainstream things like y'all want them to do. Instead he does what works.
Well this close to the trials it looks like he be better suffice to already be in Florida getting acclimated to the odd, unpredictable weather.
I understand wanting stay at altitude as long as possible but being a marathon and coming from snow and ice to 60-75ish degree weather of Florida could maybe be a little bit shocking?
According to Strava, that workout was done back on Jan 11. He was in Florida from Jan 16 until the last couple days, and now he’s back in Utah. Before that he did a few days with CJ in SoCa in December. So he’s done some acclimating.
Why would you go back to Utah? That's a 5-hr flight if you can find a non-stop flight. They both look super lithe, but Mantz esp. Rooting for him, Rupp and CJ.
