We are all only here today. None of us are responsible for what others did hundreds of years ago.
Slavery is a foundation of society in Dubai today.
Slavery is not a foundation of society in the US today.
See the difference?
Of course you are responsible. You are reaping the benefits of what was done. If you disagree, give the land back to the natives and pay reparations to the descendants of the slaves. Then let's see where the US stands.
According to your logic Dubai should get an ethical pass for slavery, because in 200 years nobody will be held responsible for it anyways.
We are responsible for what others did hundreds of years ago?
Ah, I see the problem. You are mentally ill.

Although the UAE likes to remind its critics about recent reforms, the law still leaves women vulnerable to serious abuses of their rights, with little legal recourse

Actually visit Dubai and see if you leave with warm and fuzzy feelings about what a wonderful city it is. Good chance: You won't. A few things:
- 10 times bigger than it needs to be. No "center." Urban sprawl at its very finest.
- Very, very expensive.
- Those icky Gulf demographics: A small number of rich citizens, none of whom can have dirty jobs, and a massive number "lesser" foreign workers who stand little or no chance of ever becoming citizens. Now, is that a better situation than where most of them came from? Sure. But the Emiratis aren't doing that out of kindness (just greed and haughtiness), and socially, it's creepy and gross.
- But yes, there are a LOT of impressive tall buildings, and it's pretty clean. Does that constitute nirvana?
THIS is exactly correct. Ive been there many times and Dubai (well UAE in general) is nauseating. Its opulence and consumerism run amok.
You have a bunch of rich lazy entitled Arabs who treat everyone else like garbage. And most of their contempt is saved for the actual people who make that place function, the poor underpaid semi slave workers from every Asian or African nation you can imagine.
There is no culture there to enjoy, its all artificial and soulless.
Yes the cities are sparkling clean, but it comes at a cost.

I’m an American living in Dubai and the negative things people point out about Dubai are pretty laughable.
First of all, it is not expensive. You can choose to buy expensive things, but the general cost of living is lower than in the U.S.
People also love to bring up the different classes and “slave” labor which is a big LOL. Yes, people from third world countries do a lot of the dirty work here. Yes, in a perfect world this would not happen. Let’s not pretend the U.S. doesn’t do the exact same thing with illegal immigrant labor and that the labor system in the U.S. doesn’t have the exact same goals and outcomes for people.
The low class workers here generally enjoy a higher standard of living than their home countries and if you tried to give them better circumstances most wouldn’t know what to do with it, they are uneducated and filthy for the most part. They form communities with people from their home countries and provide for themselves decently with facilities that somewhat resemble where they are from typically.
People love to point out a couple negative things about Dubai and ignore the amazing architecture, opportunities, lifestyle, safety, organization, etc. America has a lot of deep problems. Here has some too, of course, some pretty bad like LGBTQ etc. But on the whole it’s a very organized society. Look inward to unsafe cities, city streets full of homeless people’s piss and sh*t, rampant youth mental health issues.
As far as culture goes, the culture here is for everything to be nice and super cool but yeah for non emirati at least it doesn’t go much deeper than that.

Do you realize that this is almost exactly what slave owners used to say of black slaves in the US?
Why are American cities so dirty and ugly on contrast?
Well imagine if the US built a brand new city from the ground up with unlimited oil money starting right now? It would look pretty awesome. Our big cities have extensive legacy in old burnt out factories and neighborhoods long abandoned.
Trailer parks are a legitimate form of affordable housing in many American cities, so you assertion is not that big of stretch. Also look into the living conditions for all the migrant workers in places like Dubai and get back to us.
If you like big shiny buildings, gaudy shops and restaurants and "I'm rich b#tch" clubs and resorts, then Dubai is probably without parallel in the rest of the world. Outside of that, Dubai is a vapid and soulless place. All the residential areas are butt ugly. Every single family residence has a big wall around it. In more dense areas with lots of condos/apartments, there is very if any ground floor retail. Of course, the lack of any sort of cafe culture or walkable urban areas is largely due to the heat (although winters are really nice), it makes most of Dubai a city of roads, walls and towers. I will take the occasional homeless guy, street busker, graffiti and dingy bodega for classic art deco architecture, beautify brownstones, and single family neighborhoods with sidewalks, trees and people sitting on their porches.
Why are American cities so dirty and ugly on contrast?
They lucked out discovering a massive amount of oil to provide for a very small population. Imagine if they had to support a country of 330 million people with that same amount of oil money.
Why are American cities so dirty and ugly by on contrast?
You obviously haven’t seen the labour camps in Dubai where there are literally thousands of workers living in much worse conditions than trailer parks. These workers are the ones who keep the city running and get paid pittance.
Exactly. Dubai isn't that far off from a slave society. Noh bad if you have $$$, like air conditioning and want a harem... not so great otherwise or you don't want to be in a harem or other type of near prostitution. #Haram
