This was in 2003-2007 in the suburban part of a mid-large (liberal) city, so the times were different and the place was kind of moderate to slightly conservative. I doubt this would happen today.
I was "dating" a guy on the football team who I knew from when we were little (our parents were church friends and we did CCD together). Two of his friends/teammates saw me kiss him on the cheek and he played it off like "what the eff dude that's gay, f**" and then they and a few others proceeded to bully me regularly, in the locker rooms I'd just get asked if I was turned on by them and they'd like take my stuff and throw it across the locker room. They would also make fun of all the cross country/distance guys in general because we were all kind of skinny nerdier dudes compared to them and they would use me being on the team as more proof cross country guys were gay.
It went on sporadically until Midway through Junior year one of the clowns who did swimming in winter decided to beat the crap out of me (maybe an exaggeration but I had to have a tooth re-attached and my nose broken) and the school stepped in and expelled him because they had a zero tolerance policy for violence and the rest chilled out for the last year and a half. A bunch of them did track as sprinters or shotput and stuff like that so I actually skipped track sophomore year because I didn't want to spend so much time sharing space with them.
