I can believe that there's nothing more here and he didn't do anything else wrong. Some people are crazy about following the rules and can't stand to see someone break a rule, even a completely insignificant one, and want to see all rule breakers punished.

We could find who the a-rententive snitch is by reviewing the race video at the aid station since he would have to be close to be taking a video of you

Couple of questions:
1) Do you honestly think he's going to get to 2:11:30 or faster if he gets into the Trials?
2) What's his chances of making the team? Last I checked, the Trials were about making the team.
In a roundabout way, they may have done him a favor by DQ'ing him. He doesn't have to spend the money to fly/drive down to Orlando, house himself only to get waxed like Mop N Glo by Mantz, Rupp, etc.

If he was just a rule stickler, he would have shouted at you to "put the bottle down- you're not allowed to hand it to him!!!!".
That he was such a "stickler" to NOT scream and warn you, but instead let you do it and video you doing it, and report you to ensure a DQ?
There's much more going on here. Let's not be naive. I would have tried the appeal.
Definitely sounds like they were following the coach in hopes of catching him do something that maybe he's not allowed to do. Why would you just happen to be recording.
Just checking in here to let people know that I am the coach and the person that handed Ethan his bottle. No one is taking this news harder than I am and I have taken full responsibility. I've apologized to my long time personal friends who were involved in the DQ for putting them in this situation. But just to make sure there isn't confusion, the bottle I handed him, was his official nutrition bottle that was on the official nutrition table. I let my emotions and excitement get the better of me, didn't know the rules and I've been trying to make this right from the moment I learned about this. I am definitely sorry and I will definitely not do something like this ever again.

Don’t think they were trying to “catch me” or “follow me”. I was at 3, 5, 7, 14/15 (same spot), 22, 23, 24, 25.5. I rode 14.5 miles that day on the bike following on course. And it’s not like I was doing anything wrong at the places I stopped. I didn’t even make it to mile 7 for him, but caught another athlete I help.
What I think happened is that the leaders were coming back into town, someone broke out their phone to record it, and happened to get me in the video. From my friend at Mid Atlantic USATF, no one even knew it was me. The only reason people know it was me, was because I admitted after what they described the person was wearing. My friend at MAUSATF said it was hard to even see where the video was taken and suggested “Kelly Drive” which would have been 22 where the last elite bottle table was and where I grabbed the bottle. They also said it looked like it could have impeded a runner. My first instinct after Ethan grabbed the bottle was “sh*t, I hope Tracksmith guy was able to get his bottle” as he was right up Ethan’s tail. But his bottle was at a different table.
My last final thoughts, it’s just weird because if this person actually followed the race unfold, Ethan was driving the entire 2nd half of that race. the guy that finished 5th was dropping back (didnt know he was Canadian), and was yelling at him to close that gap bc that’s where his OT time was going to come from.

I am a guy that runs marathons regularly around the women's olympic trials qualifying time and I have definitely seen some women chasing the standard receive bottles during races from bystanders. I never thought there was a rule against this until I saw this news and I imagine they didn’t either.

It’s rich that McKirdy somehow injected himself into this. All of the runners that qualified for the OT at his marathon received way more aid than what Ethan did in Philly and ran on a pancake flat course. The Philly course is NOT easy or particularly fast. USATF is a joke if they uphold this DQ.
I am actually for these types of rules... In other words if elites get bottles so does your aunt running a 5 hour marathon. Also I think DQs like this only should be held if they are consistently enforced. In other words ask every official if they DQ'd every runner who received any aid from any person on the course that wasn't a volunteer.. the answer for Philly would obviously be no considering no one give a crap about this violation for a mid or back packer in the race. If you as an official cannot check your bias and your scrutiny based on level of athlete you should be removed as an official.
The consistency must be mandated. Did that official stay at that location the entire race and mark every number that violated this? If the official cannot answer that question in a protest the authority of that official and their bias needs to be called into question including this ruling

Nonsense. Elites get their own bottle tables with their own bottles that have been delivered there. Your aunt is lucky to get a 1/5th cup of water pouted a by a volunteer who's gotten bored. Elites get delivered to the start line, don't have to wait for security or bathrooms, and get a technical briefing of the course. They get a bike yelling to watch out for trolley tracks. Elites don't have the same rules.
But regular runners get the volunteers handing them cups of water. It's moronic that elites can't have that as well.
