Top individuals should be able to run about as fast as the top triathletes do at the end of an Ironman as they are metabolically limited too. So 2:30ish marathon pace.
How are you getting to this conclusion?
Ultrarunning is not a Triathlon with three different types of stresses for different sports.
Someone made an initial thread about this - I think the main issue people have with this besides it not being a very common distance for people to run and the difficulty of it still kind of being an unknown is that most people just don't like Charlie and the image he puts off. Seems like he doesn't have a great reputation among most runners. His insta definitely puts off "I'm trying my hardest to look cool" vibes, and from what I've heard he has daddys money and doesn't really need to work and can just train instead. Regardless he definitely still works hard, but not every sub-elite can train as a job and have endless money to spend on supplements, race nutrition for practice, and recovery tools.

This is spot on. And not every sub-elite can train as a job, some are working full time just to put food on the table.

Huh??? "Most people" never heard of Charlie until about 24 hours ago. I think the few people you are referring to are envious of his look cool vibes and the fact he has access to some disposable income.
The overwhelming rate limiting factor for someone finishing an Ironman and running 50 miles is that they simply can't down enough carbs, so must rely on fat oxidation to produce energy.
So it's not surprising at all that the pace for the top guys in each is about the same.

People have no idea how mediocre this is. Probably about 1/2 of 2:10 marathoners could beat this with a few 3 hour training runs in their regular program. That said, good for him.
Way more than half. If you can run 26 miles at sub 5 pace you can run 5:45 pace for 50. It was a good race for Charlie, but it's not like he's just exceptionally good at the 50 miles but not at the marathon. There are certainly some people faster than him in the marathon who are just barely holding on for the marathon distance and wouldn't still beat him in the 50 mile, but most would still be beating him at 50 miles, no one tries to run 50 miles. If someone threw up a ton of prize money and had people actually try to run a fast 50 mile, you would see how many people could run fast for that long. But there's not much gain for trying to run a fast 50 mile. It trashes your body for a while so you can't run other fast races anytime soon, and there's very little money involved. Obviously someone like CJ Albertson would be one of the best since he somewhat regularly runs 25-30 miles at 5:00-5:15 pace.

His dad is a gym teacher in a poor town in Minnesota where he grew up, population like 2000 people. So, get your facts straight.
Not clear where this guy is getting money from, but he’s clearly getting a lot of help from someone. He doesn’t have a job, but lives in Boulder and lives a pretty lavish life. No way that’s from money that he’s made.

Just the normal trust fund kid. Colorado is full of them.
By "most people" I mean most people who knew about Charlie before this record. I don't know him well personally and haven't met him, but I know MANY people in Boulder who do. He's had a long history of joining sub-elite teams and then either being kicked off or leaving them within a few month. He's run on the Hanson's team. He pushed himself into running with the Tinman team when he wasn't officially part of tinman elite. He's been "sponsered" by almost every brand under the sun (I think he was with under armor for, like, a week or two). Most recently he was a part of Roots and got kicked off. I don't know the full details, but I do know it wasn't because he wanted to leave - the coach didn't want to put up with him.
I don't think anyone is envious of his "look cool vibes", but they are definitely (understandably) envious of his financial situation. Someone mentioned that I'm wrong about him having familial wealth. You can say what you want, but his parents have money and connections which have allowed him to train this way.
Again, he works hard, and he has run the fastest 50 mile race in history. These are undeniable facts. He did all of this coming back from a serious injury (sacrum fracture or something like that?) which is extremely impressive and takes enormous resilience. However I just want to give context behind why some people are "hating". I don't think it's entirely unjustified. As for whether the record is "soft" or not - hopefully some more sub-elite marathoners chase down the record and we can see if it's as easy as everyone thinks.
He has always been an image guy that eventually becomes to much for people to tolerate. He was like this in HS. Now that he is a 50 mile world record holder he will become even more insufferable.
This dude posted about how the 50km championship was “his to lose” when he had to drop out because of his injury. There were 3-4 other 2:15-2:17 guys in the race and he was 6th the last time he raced it.
If he’s going to disrespect ultras, he doesn’t deserve respect for doing well at ultras. Can’t have it both ways.

Apparently Charlie’s father was a college football star at Minnesota-Duluth and maybe he was in training camp with the Vikings one fall. Maybe Charlie is just trying to please mommy as apparently she used to be his coach and maybe he is trying to show he is almost as much of a man as his daddy.
Dayum! Y'all are like a bunch of old biddies. Rumors, gossip, put downs, casting aspersions.....Not like Charles went out and kicked an old dog. All he did was run a very solid 50 miler.
