LRC Note: Hello everyone. Jonathan Gault reached out to Letesnbet's management team to ask them about her grabbing her shorts. They responded that it's "a little bit (of) a habit of Letesenbet at times, that she will learn to control the more experienced she gets."
Well her chain is hitting her in the face so she was trying to tuck it. She was probably flogged and her form was going and so it was bouncing around more and annoying her.
That or she felt the presence of the Bathurst sniper and was scared she was about to get eliminated again.
Trust me all the antics you saw was about faith and hope! Hard to understand for you as you would want her to pump those arms but faith is even greater in the Ethiopian culture than technique😉
God gave it to Obiri today but she still was gracious in the end😇
imagine going through life with the legitimate belief that God was sitting there picking sides in sporting events….
You guys can’t understand this! Since you are not the same culture or for instance don’t even grasp african cultures!
Gidey was kissing the necklace praying for good fate! She comes from a very deep orthodox culture! Many Ethiopian women even carry pictures in their bras or shorts hoping God to help or show mercy! From this vid it almost looks like the elastic was loose and she was pushing in her tshirt to tighten it around her waist or something.
Thanks for the link. Her swiping her nose is normal for her. She does that in every road race and often on track too. There was something discomfiting her about her shorts towards the end but like many others, I don’t think that’s what cost her the race, rather Obiri simply bulldozed her on the up ramp near the end.
Gidey is just very unlikely to win a race with her final kick. Remember even the lesser known Gezahegne outkicked her in the Tokyo’20 10k even though the top three hung together until the final lap.
To all those saying Letesenbet isn’t much of a kicker. The only ones who beat her in races are the four best female distance kickers of all time namely, Obiri, Tsegay, Kipyegon and Hassan. in the the race today Obiri laid down the fastest final mile of all time in the women’s marathon. It’s no disgrace to finish a few second adrift to a performance like that. This being said however, Gidey will undoubtedly need to develop the confidence to surge earlier in order to nullify the kickers. Almaz Ayana had the right approach but nobody else has managed to replicate her mental toughness since it seems…
Nope, Kalkidan Gezahegne outkicked her in Tokyo’20 10K in the last lap. Eugene’22 was the only time Gidey’s kick paid off, brilliantly at that.
Obiri just had too much speed at the end. However, she has the wildest form, arms flying all over the place, as high as her forehead and elbows going way back, her stride all over too--just watch the charge up the last hill. Hasn't exactly killed her career, though.

True- but there are some things worth watching for the aesthetic beauty and appreciation regardless. One of them is Letesenbet Gidey…

And that list of the best female distance kickers needs to include Tirunesh Dibaba.
What’s up with Gidey that last 400? Fixing her chain and shorts and gave up the win.
As for her shorts and/or her singlet, I think she was just uncomfortable with them, and when you're at the end of the marathon, and hurting, you fixate with one thing and you just can't do anything else. About the chain, I suppose she was trying to kiss her. (Some) religious people do this weird useless thing many times, when going out from home, before the beginning of a race, etc. So Gidey wanted to ask her god to give her help for the last kick. But of course, if god(s) is/are everywhere why do you need to kiss a chain just to communicate with... it/him/her/them? And also, marathon is not about praying, but training, obviously.
For those asking for a video (around min 9:30)
Sorry for the choice, just mute it to stop listening to that moron, the only one I could find.

I'm mad at myself for not asking Gidey about this in the post-race press conference given how often she was adjusting her singlet/shorts and how late into the race she was doing it.
I did message her agent Valentijn Trouw about it. Here's what he told me:
"Its a little bit a habit of Letesenbet at times, that she will learn to control the more experienced she gets."
