If it is any consolation to you guys, I don’t think sub-15min 5k shape on an outdoor track, for Valby, automatically translates to sub-15min 5k shape on an Indoor track. And that is not a knock on Valby. I just don’t think her biomechanics are as suited for the tight turns of an indoor track, vs a more compact athlete like Tuohy.
For this reason, I’m not sure if running Indoor is a good idea for Valby. Because she doesn’t do as much running mileage, we would not expect her lower extremities to be as strong and acclimated. Acclimation and strengthening is key. She should be doing proper prehab plyo/strength work along with her aerobic machine work, to stave off injury.
To further emphasize this, if you guys are or were actually runners, you are aware that, particularly when starting out, one’s aerobic fitness develops much faster than the chassis, and because one can be much more aerobically fit than their body can handle it, they get injured by going too hard and too fast, too soon (on hard surfaces).
Valby redline. She let the Alabama runner rabbit her.
Do you like to troll. Valby obviously was going to run her pace whatever the Bama runner was going to do. But if you actually do think the Bama runner “rabbitted” her in that race…then that may explain some things.
Rabbiting is a term that is used in horse racing. The idea was that the owner would piut a rabbit in the race and the favorite would reatct to it and burn oitself out. When the Alabama runner briefly went ahead Valby took off at top speed. She redlined. If redlining was the game plan, Ok. Curious plan.

Typically when one is rabbiting a race, it means they are the one in front, leading.
Valby said in her post-race interview that she knew she had to let DL go, because PV knew that pace was too hot when DL took off. Soon thereafter, DL slowed (maybe she misjudged where the course ended) and Valby overtook her. Blank and FastTuohy already looked at the splits of the race. It wasn’t so much that Valby kicked, but rather, did not slow down.
But yeah, it was apparent she went all-out in prep for Natty’s. And maybe she was practicing the situation where she’ll need to be able to increase pace even more, if possible, at the end of the race.
Just different use of the term. She definitely reacted. As I recall the discussion Valby started feeling it in the last km and slowed down. DL fell off a cliff.

I think whether one is a Valby fan or not, we are a bit shocked at what we witnessed in her two recent performances. It still hasn’t quite sunk in, and we know it can be taken away (injury, etc.)

It's clear from watching the race that DL thought she was finishing. Evidently, she must have been going quite hard before the extra effort to make such an error, but on the other hand, there are a lot of short courses.
In any case, she passed just before the "pre-finish finish" and then realized that she had another loop (ouch). This is why it looks like Valby immediately reacted, but it was really Doris immediately slowing down. Hats off to DL for being able to regain herself well enough to hang onto 2nd. If you've every miscalculated a finish (like in an indoor 5K), the extra distance is pure hell. Most people either DNF or have to drop way back. If this hadn't happened to Doris, she would likely have finished no more than 15-20seconds back of Valby.
Yep, we'll learn more at west regional, but Machu just beat Pellicoro at wcc by 20 seconds. Pellicoro was 25th last yr at nats, so the 5-15 range is pretty good.
Yes, it was a surprising error, but they did go by the finish multiple times (not just twice), and the time that DL sped up and passed was at ~4K, and not 3K. When watching it, it's pretty clear that either she made this blunder, imo. Perhaps (but I obviously don't think so) she rallied to give one last-gasp effort to take the lead in hoped that PV would fold. But, if so, it would be ironic that this happened right at the finish line, and the way that she was instantly dropped )like a hot potatoe) right after the finish line was notable.

I don't think we have seen the best from Lemngole. I predict she goes with Valby again at nationals. If no one goes with Valby, or at least stalks her from a close distance, I will be very surprised. I don't think sticking with a much slower chase pack until 4k is a viable strategy this year for Tuohy or any title contenders.

I agree. The Lemngole-Tuohy-Valby trio will almost certainly separate from the field sooner rather than later. A fourth may tag along (Stearns, Roe or Scrimgeour?), but the chance of losing ground late to the negative-splitting, fast closers seems high.

I don't really see Chmiel, Stearns, Roe tagging along. More likely it will unfold like last year with a breakaway chase pack.
The only runners who I think would possibly go with V-T-L are Olemomoi, Bunnage, or someone more unknown - Maybe other Kenyan freshman (Kosgei, Cherubet) or Macchu because she looks to be an aggressive frontrunner also.
Perhaps Tuohy and Lemgole can stalk Valby together.

One possible scenario: V-T-L at the front. The second group you mention form a pack of 2-3 (possibly containing Matoug, Olemomoi, Kosgei) within 7-12 seconds back, hoping to hang on and pick up carnage in the last k. Next come Stearns and Chmiel, with the 3M’s of Maatoug, Markezich and Mitchell close behind. Stalking the 3M’s are Mazza-Downie, Scrimgeour, Asekol, Noe, Machu, Churchill…

Yes. The only counterpoint I will make, looking at it further, is that the men's 8k winning time at SEC was quite fast also - 22:23. Valby's time was about 83.2% of the mens winning time which is slightly fast but not startlingly so. Lemngole was 85.7%. Tuohy was 84.0% at ACCs.

I’ve likely missed some names making the top 15.
In this scenario, I'd expect Roe to be the mix with Olemomoi & co. I like Jepkirui and Ramsden ahead of Mazza-Downie and Machu, but that could change in a week.
Btw, whatever happened to FastTuohy? Username change?
