To think Kerr ran 3:47 at 5th Ave and could've done this instead...
Come to think of it, good point. What are the factors going into this? Was the 5th Ave appearance fee + prize money more than the WR bonus + Gold medal bonus for Road Running Worlds? Or did he just not want to be racing in October?
Doubt anyone knew a month ago that a WR bonus was up for grabs. They seemingly just announced that Nikki Hiltz and Sam Prakel were WR holders for the road mile. 5th Ave prize money is $10,000. This win is $10,000. Although Kerr probably used all of that for his Uber from Boston to NY cause of flight problems.
Easy money for the milers considering Faith Kipyegon had a bad day. $60k. Consider that Assefa got $30k + $50k for her 2:11:53 Berlin marathon.

1. winning is important and Hobbs just got some great experience in a tactical race
2. as others have said, you can only beat the guys that show up
Yeah, agreed. I feel like anyone who is aware that there's a World Road Running Championships happening this weekend is enough of a running dork to understand the context of this race. If you know/care who Hobbs Kessler is, chances are you know who Jakob/Kerr/Nordas/etc. are and know that this road mile field isn't on the same level as the world track championships. That doesn't mean we can't enjoy today's race or Hobbs's win. It was an exciting finish, he looked super pumped, and it's great momentum and a confidence boost for one of the USA's rising stars. We can be happy about that without needing to compare it unfavorably to other men's 1500/mile races this season.

5TH AVENUE MILE was downhill
It didn't meet record course standards
Yeah, I know. I meant the WR being up for grabs at Riga with the bonus.
HAHAHA, HE GOT 2 THINGS IN 2023 THAT JAKOB DIDN'T: A WORLD RECORD AND WORLD GOLD MEDAL IN THE 1,500M / MILE! LOL
I like Hobbs, cool guy and rock climbers have some of the most impressive power/weight ratios, but good luck on him getting an Olympic gold medal in the 1500. If he does medal in the 15, i'd like to see him try a double medal in rock climbing, that would be very cool.

A 3:29 guy ran high 3:47 at 5th Ave. Mile. How much help are you getting when you have downhill, uphill, downhill and run a bit slower than your flat pr's?

They must be crazy strict on what constitutes a legal course. Here is Ovett running 3:56.06 nearly 40 years ago.
This race took place on the streets of London at the end of the 1985 season.Steve Cram was at the peak of his powers, having broken 3 world records that summ...
Y'all are acting like he only would have deserved praise if he beat Kerr's 5th Ave time and, thus, run a ~3:47 today and thus won a race against some very, very good milers by TEN SECONDS.
I get the WR title is ridiculous, but give the 20 year old his moment. Would Nuguse have pulled this off 4 years ago?
1) Hobbs was running a mile race devoid of the real contenders. Didn't Josh Kerr ran a 3:47 mile in NYC while Jakob would obviously be running around the same?
2) Hobbs didn't run any mile WR if 1) is true.
3) Mile WRs on the road are unfair as no 2 races are the same route.

Yeah mile WRs on the road are highly erratic as you can 101 types of routes and bends, wind directions, anthropogenic RF exposures, elevation and gradients etc. I wouldn't be too excited about Hobbs 'WR'.
On the other hand I'm gonna always swoon over El G's morally established and certified mile and 1500m WRs!
Yes i agree. From this angle you are right. All races are enjoyable in and of themselves as all races are unique and doesn't need to be relative to other races. But I'm an RF geek and RF geeks are extremely competitive when it comes to the truth you know? But it doesn't mean I can't be amused and thrilled by Hobbs winning the race.
