Long-serving California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein has died at age 90. Despite being elected from one of the most liberal states in the country, Fei...
I dunno about Supreme Court being by far the least corrupt. I mean Repubs in the House and Senate are extremely corrupt, but the conservatives on the Supreme Court are also pretty corrupt. They are currently going through a major ongoing corruption scandal. Really the only thing we can say for sure is that wherever you find Republicans in government you will find massive corruption. Though that's not an age/term issue cuz with the self-radicalizing of the Republicans party and conservative america and their total break with reality the past 30 years any new repubs that replace old repubs are going to be on average more corrupt than the old already very corrupt repubs.
There’s plenty of corruption to go around, and it’s not only republicans. All the way from Rod Blagoyevich to Bob Menendez. It’s not limited to one party. It is telling that the GOP hasn’t said much about Menendez, though. Pretty pathetic all around.
Sen Feinstein had dementia, her staff voted for her and she was completely unfit to serve for the last 3-4 years.
We need term limits and age limits for both houses of Congress.
I propose the following:
Age limit: 70 (POTUS, Senate & House)
For the Senate: 2 terms which is 12 years
For the House: 4 terms which is 8 years
There are too many in Congress who are older than 70 right now. They all need to go.
Trump is too old
Biden is too old
Grassley is too old, too many terms
Bernie is too old, too many terms
McConnell is too old, too many terms

There are so few things 95+% of Americans agree on and I really feel like this is one of them.
It's wild to watch Feinstein for the last IDK 8 or so years.
RBG sullied her legacy by not retiring when she should have. It's her fault we have the red court we have and Roe was overturned.
McConnell freezing in press conference, just seems like elder abuse to trot him out there. Feinstein a human corpse, just awful.
regardless of how you feel about their politics, young vibrant leaders like Trudeau, Macron, Zelenskyy, Adern, Marin, Sunak just seem to engender more faith and confidence. Even Obama--you gotta admit, love him or hate him, we felt he was alert and up for the job. They have more energy. To be led by this retirement home is a national security issue at this point.
People of California continued to vote for Feinstein. Age didn't make Feinstein a corrupt tool of M.I.C. Age didn't make Feinstein a greedy crook with her insider trading.
When the primary and the party locks her in, there really isn't a real choice
Banning future lobbying is an absolutely key reform. Term limits would remove most of the effective members of Congress. Age limits would probably be regarded as unconstitutional.
You have got to have effective, enforceable anti-corruption measures to keep our democracy going.
I understand the intent, but access is a most critical aspect of lobbying. How do you propose to control an ex-legislator’s private behavior of introducing contacts to other contacts? There are any number of ways to structure the “lobbying consultant” relationship that make banning that near impossible.
Is there any country in the world that offers an anti-corruption model to keep its legislators middle class? How exactly does it work? It’s like telling the fox to guard the chicken coop.
But voters should not vote for dinosaurs if they don't want them to serve. The whole problem lies with the voters - that is, with the American public at large.
Maybe we should just go into a Walmart, McDonald's, YMCA, child care center, UPS, etc. and helping every day citizens to run for office.
I've often thought that we would do just as well, or perhaps better, by have public officials simply appointed (or at least offered an appointment) based on a lottery - basically how jury pools are formed. That way, we would not have folks specifically chosen as the most narcissistic, dishonest folks among us.
Think back to the folks who ran for class president in school. What did they have in common? Narcissism, giant egos, etc. Politicians are of the same ilk.
Maybe we should just go into a Walmart, McDonald's, YMCA, child care center, UPS, etc. and helping every day citizens to run for office.
No schit, a high school education should be a requirement. I don't think old people should be able to vote. They get too grumpy. Take the average live expectancy of men and women, subtract 18, and that's the last year you get to vote
I thought this was a running website. What does this discussion have to do with distance running . There are plenty of political sites to have this discussion .

Yeah, good point. What I am thinking is that anybody who is not like me should not be allowed to vote.
To expound, quid pro quo is constitutionally illegal. But isn't pay for play another version of quid pro quo?
We need to unify as Americans to switch the standard. Donors are not freedom. When you link debate qualifying to donations and donors, you're creating a de facto socialism model in both the DNC and RNC. Why can't someone be a surprise? Maybe the surprise is the right President.
Getting into debates being tied to donor money or the number of donations has nothing to do with socialism. When we use the word socialism to refer to anything we don't like we render the word meaningless. Below is the typical definition of socialism
a political and economic theory of social organization which advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.
no one would say a man should resign because he died
but seriously, pelosi is as aold or older than all these doddering people and i dont think even her biggest critics would deny that she's extremely sharp. our gerontocracy is concerning, but idk if an age limit makes sense when there's such a huge range of what people are like at 80

I agree with you that they are too old but as others have said the voters keep electing them, so term limits only seek to disenfranchise those voters.
The bigger issue is that the Post War generation (78-95 yo) experienced the poverty of the depression/war era. They are damaged beyond repair by these events and cannot let go for a second in fear that everything will go away (their prosperity). So, these people die in office while collecting aluminum cans for the nickel refund. But by not ceding their positions to the you get generations (a la Washington) who are waiting and waiting and waiting to “get theirs.” However, the time is so short for these people that they are grossly and outwardly corrupt doing whatever they can get away with.
Our only hope is that the Post War generation die soon, the Xers get on drugs and that the Millennials can balance duty and economy.

No we do not need age limits. Although I am in favor of term limits it is not going to be a panacea.
What we need is a better educated and informed voter base. People of California chose to vote for Feinstein on deaths door. Is an age limit suddenly going to make Californian's vote for someone better? They'll just get some moron, ala Kamala Harris, who is younger. Would an age limit have stopped Pennsylvanian's voting in a senator who had a stroke and can't string together a complete sentence. This is a voter issue and unless voters take it on themselves to better informed whatever clever idea you think you have that will revolutionize the system; age limits, term limits, ranked choice voting, etc will make no difference.

Anyone see this nonsense? I'd rather have Barbara Lee, who is 77, than this trick. This is part of the reason why people go for older candidates. The younger ones can't be taken seriously.
It may come as no surprise that Meghan Markle's (pictured) name was being bandied about in Hollywood last night as a long-shot replacement for Californian Senator Dianne Feinstein .
I totally agree. These old fossils get corrupted by big money and special interests. Those interests then donate tons of money to rotten apples like Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy (both of whom are Democrats in practice), making it hard for challengers to win elections. So new blood and new ideas - ideas/policies that most Americans support - are blocked out by these old/corrupt incumbents.

Yeah. Because the younger folks are certainly not corrupted by big money and special interests.
