We like to have 1 thread per topic so we merged two threads together and kept the title of this thread. The other thread was entitled, "Assefa performance."
I really worry that in the near future, no one will be able to break a World Record without being suspected of Drugs, I hope I am wrong and most will see new World Records as solely because of Hard Work, Consistency and Dedication in Training, proper amount of sleep and a fairly Healthy Diet
In the near future? It’s already that way. Probably has been for 40 years or more to anyone who was paying attention. The fact is drugs work and the difference in talent among the best in any sport is razor thin. Everything you listed is still required but the likelihood of a “clean” athlete beating someone on PEDs is highly unlikely.
Yep. I'm in my 40s and every world record setter in my lifetime has been suspected of doping.
Drugs, drugs and more drugs. A beginner, running only her third marathon, is now faster than the great Abebe Bikila, when he set a world record at Tokyo in '64, winning by 3 minutes.
Wow, you make a great point. That is a shocking reality check.
hmmmm.....maybe, over time, women are meant to run long distances very fast, it's just that it's taken them awhile to catch up. I think that theory is as viable as the many drug theories out there.
Adidas wants us to believe it was their $500 disposable shoe (predicted durability 30 miles) that was the reason she ran so quickly. Of course, Kipchoge still won the Berlin Marathon in his older Alphaflys. If she is indeed doping and gets caught, I hope people endlessly make fun of Adidas for their $500 shoe and ask if the reason it's so expensive is the side of EPO it comes with!

Track and field has become comical, and entertaining. Its right up there with professional bodybuilding.
Here is how the date is switched from Dec to Mar and vice versa in Ethiopia
Born: December 4, 1997. (let us say).
Simply writing 25-3-1990 would be interpreted as March 5, 1990 in Europe (day first). So somebody made a mistake by forgetting to translate the day/month. A later correction would replace the March birthdate with the December date.
Easy to predict and doesn't matter as WA has changed her date of birth by ~2 years.

Has become comical? It's been comical for decades. It's about as real as professional wrestling.
1) Praise the best T&F WR of all time? 2) Revise the point system to account for.... new shoes? 3) Ask questions?
The problem with WA scores is that they don't matter. It's clear for all intelligent people outside of community. They are calculated by some boring statisticians with ugly glasses and they are often wrong.
You can see that 100 WR / 200 and especially 400mH is "weak" and "easy" why 800m 1:51.53 WR will never happen.
Kenya has been cleaned up a little (not enough) in recent years, but Ethiopia remains a free for all. This will continue. Some other Ethiopian woman you've never heard of will run 2:10 next year.
Yeah, it’s just a complete joke now. Unfortunately, it’s made ‘elite’ road running completely unwatchable for me now. The Africans turn up massively doped, dominate the top 10, go home with their new cars and cash to buy houses..Get popped a year or two later (who cares? They got the car and house and never have to give it back). They’re still massively better off than if they hadn’t doped enormously since being teenagers. No one cares! All the incentives and none of the disincentives to play by the normal rules. It’s completely destroying the sport.
this is voted down a lot, but it's true. amounts of money which are good for a year or two of basic living in the USA are completely life changing in these places. the risk of getting popped is 100% worth it. just for one large bag
When we are given such a scenario as in today's women's race at the 2023 berlin marathon we need to consider all the usual temporality factors/culprits:
1) The Addidas new shoes which obviously came just before the berlin marathon. Some significant weight must be attached to this shoe I believe.
2) Drugs. You can't escape this charge for every new WR. But I'm a little apprehensive here as the women's marathon WR might have been softer than we would like to think for the type of supershoes afforded the runners. Gidey has a 1:02:52 Half WR. This means it's possible to extrapolate up till 2:08 for the women's marathon WR. 64x2.
3) Windless or good weather. I think this can cause resonant physical effects with point 1 above and amplify any WR performance.

I do agree that this Ethiopian lady really surprised me as she wasn't a name that came by this forum at least once a year at all! If Gidey broke the WR it would have been less of a surprise and shock for me as her name comes by once a month here.

Gidey is likely doping as well. Her half WR is also pretty outrageous.

Nobody runs a marathon 1 min slower than hm pace. 2 mins is about as good as it gets for any one with legit times.
that being said this time is right in line for 14 min runners who are marathon specialists.
The time is insane. But no more than the rest of the times we have seen this summer.
