So I spend my time here relentlessly trumpeting my achievements? I thought I was discussing Jakob, like the rest of you. I suppose it is too much of an expectation that you would understand anything being discussed here - including my comment you so feebly responded to.
Yeah I agree. This is an extremely level headed, modest response. It gives creedence to that you only want people to behave courteously to each other.
No, I don't. I never said I give a fig about your "courtesy". But that has nothing to do with narcissism, which is the trait Ingebrigtsen demonstrates or there wouldn't be pages here trying to define what is meant by - in his case - "cockiness" or " "confidence". If that is all he showed there wouldn't be pages on a thread trying to justify his self-absorbed personality.

See clip. For those without instagram he basically says “If you’re going to be better than everyone else you need to act like you’re better than everyone else”
Keep in mind Jacob's first language isn't English. While he is pretty fluent, he still seems somewhat uncomfortable in English. Before I can really judge him, I would have to hear him in Norwegian, which I don't speak. Even if you speak other languages really well (better than he speaks English), you are likely not a poet - or even a good trash talker.
Jakob is not insecure and he's not going to change with age. The clips of him 10+ years ago are evidence of that.
The best aspect by far is the spontaneity. None of this stuff is scripted. He has a remarkably quick mind and can do a ton with a handful of words, even in not his native language. That's where, "Just the next guy," and "Just stay as close as possible to me...," come from.
He lost a coveted world championship race a month ago. Threads here were proclaiming the cliche devastation. Meanwhile Jakob used the 2000 world record to fully restore the swagger already, to the point his detractors are already desperate for a season ending defeat.
I wish somebody would ask Jakob about Laros, asking if he views him as a threat. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. I don't know how Jakob would handle that, if he'd assign an ounce of different category maybe or brashly dismiss. I think there would be some respect. Prodigies generally acknowledge each other.
Jakob has a "remarkably quick mind"? Guess you have a low bar for intelligence.
I guess i have a low bar too then, cuz i find Jakob's answers interestingly detailed and nuanced compared to many other runners. At times he's quick and funny (if i break the record you'll have to build a statue of me, stick with me and you'll break 346 etc), and other times he pauses and thinks carefully before giving a more balanced reply.
What stands out is that each answer is usually unique to the the performance, he doesn't rattle off trite praises to god or coach, or standards like "at the end of the day i gave it 110% because my back was against the wall even though i had my A game". He gives precise nerdy answers about things like wind, pace, pacers and what records are possible or not at has current training level. How often have i seen runners blow away their PB, look shocked and stunned as if they had no idea of their capabilities - that's kinda inspiring, but also shows a lack of intelligence wrt their training/ability and/or lack of intelligence from their coach. He's not entirely self absorbed, acknowledging Wightman as a "good guy" after his loss, and McSweyn and others for their excellent pacing.
Lastly, he seems to inspire interviewers to ask better questions, rather then just phoning it in and asking "so, uh, tell us about your race". After the mile, the interviewers were all talking over each other in excitement. For sure he is blunt and cocky, and does eventually say stuff like "it is what it is", a euphemism for "this is my fourth interview and that question is now boring", but... ...overall his interview intelligence creates press and so is good for the sport.

Lol, it goes with your personality traits that you "dont give a fig about my 'courtesy'". That doesn't mean I am wrong. Your critizism looses all the edge it could have had given how you behave yourself.

JI seemed irrritated by the last couple questions, because he already gave the answers precise, had to get into repeat mode. It was impressive, his patience, so close after his performance, full with adrenaline. It's as if some interviewers have no real clue what physical and mental performance is needed and what the complexity of JI his answers implied. Let's run has listen better and think their questions through a tad quicker and smarter or rather not ask anything imo.
If you're insinuating that Curry is less successful in his sport than Jakob is in his, you're 100% incorrect.
He could've easily been part of the 2020 Olympic championship winning USA team if he had chosen to.
Curry has such a huge impact on the sport of basketball that he literally changed the game, forcing teams to adopt most 3-pt shooting heavy playbooks and reimagining the point guard position. He's also consistently ranked in polls as among the top-10 or top-20 greatest basketball players of all time.

I also have that low bar then. I agree with everything you say. I have seen a lot of interviews from athletes in all kinds of sports in my life, and Jakob is definitely one of the more interesting and insightful interviewees. I find him very patient, and like you say, he gives detailed, honest and thoughtful answers. "It is what is is" is pretty much the only phrase he'll eventually say, but you can tell he really wants to give insightful answers. And I do think he is a very clear and good communicator.
His English is really good and dont think there is a language barrier for him. I do not think he is uncomfortable in English at all, like someone suggested. He knows what he is saying, and those "cocky" quotes and snappy oneliners are not clumsy but very much on purpose, in my opinion. He is smart, he knows what he is doing and what effect it has.
And agree that he also pushes the press to ask better questions.
Jakob is a fantastic interview and refreshingly honest, direct, and literal. I believe his interview conduct is revealing of his champion's mindset. My favorite example was when he corrected an interviewer after his 3:27 Diamond League race with many PRs behind him. The reporter says something like, "It's great that many of those people chasing you got PRs!" And Jakob says, "They weren't chasing me, I was towing them to PRs". It's extremely insightful, literally accurate, and a great twist on a normal statement that none of us would challenge except Jakob. If you want to call this "arrogant" I think you are way off base. He IS the best and does not "owe" the fans nor the other athletes any deference. As with Tiger Woods in golf, the other runners should get into the habit of thanking him profusely every day for what he does for their times and the sport interest level.

I can see you were a class monitor as a school boy.

I like the way he "towed" three runners to prs in three consecutive WC finals. That he lost. El G preferred to win.
Good to see you back, Army. Have you enjoyed Eugene? You saw all the races?
Mu dipping under 1:55 and reaching now clearly doped territory after beeing likely clean with her slowish 1:55.04.
Your favorite athlete winning Mile and 3000m. He is good, OK, but nothing special. Many more PBs and NRs.
Almost sub 14 from Tsegay + 14:05 from young Chebet. Also super fast women's steeple. What about sprint and hurdles? Also not that bad, I'm sure you agree. What about Mondo? A 9.58 level performance which he will improve further to at least 6.35 in the years to come (worth 9.45 in the 100m). Two black dudes with sub 1:43 in the 800. What a depth in men's shot. You must have enjoyed the full meeting.
OK, you waited and waited and no Snell. Walker unfortunately also wasn't there. What about Dixon, Quax? Do you have any info what has happened? And Lovelock?

It was a choice between Eugene and WWE. Actually, that isn't a choice.
I guess El G did not prefer to win the olympics in 1996 and 2000 then.
5 world championship titles to zero. And just as many Olympic 1500 titles - despite a fall and a silver. And the 1500/mile wr's that Jakob doesn't have. But keep "towing" other runners, Jakob - they find it helpful when they pass you in the straight.

El G got "towed" as well, lest one forget the WC championship record.
