Kilian has one of the highest V02 maxes , and has a godlike aerobic engine from years of crushing ultra distance events. And yet he can also run world class vertical kilometres and casually ran a sub-30 10k despite being injured and with crap shoes. Nobody in the world has such running gifts, he has achieved more than Bekele and Kipchoge combined.
So, all of those 17 runners are international runners with medals/participation in senior international championships?
At least one of the guys behind Kilian in the race had medals... Jakob himself was in that 10K about a mile back.
I think it's laughable to call 29:59 a bad performance. It's a one-time shot. It's on the road. He wasn't wearing supershoes. He skis in the winter. He doesn't have a track, cross country running, or road race background. Usually runs steep and and down. Trained for just one season faster stuff, and pops a sub-30. That's seriously impressive. His body is obviously capable of way faster if he had: run high school XC/track, college XC track, pro XC/track/road, had a decade of training flat/fast, and was paid to run flat/fast races.
So, there were most local club runners, or? Its 17 Norwegian runners. Norway don't have 17 great international runners, although they are quite good at the moment.
Its an OK time for an mountain runner, the critique comes from Kilian himself saying he runs sub 29.30 in training after a hard workout. I think its fairly reasonable to expect more given Kilians own words.

It's just one race. So what? Maybe he was tired or left his race in his workout. Happens to all of us, but then we race again.
I thought it was obvious that the lack of respect was against the world class runners that he calls club runners. I have no opinion about Kilians marathon time (nor do I really care as he wouldnt be close to world leading there, and speculations suck), I just find the obsession this poster have with hating on kilian weird, and the tendency to pretend like those who beat him are rubbish runners wrong.
Hey Lars,
So, all of those 17 runners are international runners with medals/participation in senior international championships?
This is beyond stupid. Really. The race was one of the premier road races in Norway, the field had some of the best runners in Norway, a nation that took 2 medals in the 1500 WC final. In that race there were four runnefs that would become (or was) 1500 WC medallists Do you think there is a sudden drop off from that to nobodies running around with a beer belly? Did I said that all was international runners? No, but a lot were, so the assertion that Kilian was beaten by "17 club runners" are beyond stupid. You are not a bum if you get beaten by 17 people in a high level race with several WC medallists. Try to think for your self, you can do it.

Someone is a bit angry today, struggle to have a normal conversation without raging like a kid?
Point being, that he got beaten by a handfull of class runners doesn't change the fact that he got beaten by several good national level runners he should've beaten if he runs 29:42 in training after an all out vertikal K.
You seem to think this is about lack of respect for Norwegian runners, it is not. Running sub 32, sub 31, sub 30 is all good. The point is that Killian is not as good of a flat runner that he himself claims, and that is also fine, he excels at his sports like few others.

4 1500 WC medalists? Mind listing them?
3*, Jakob Ingebrigtsen (pretty sure he had a DNF), Filip Ingebrigtsen and Narve Gilje Nordås.
I don't think this would be a close race, but the ppl saying mid-2:20s need to give Killian some credit. A 29:59 road 10k is worth a 2:22 according to IAAF tables. Not sure if that 29:4x after the vertical K is legit or not, but let's just say Killian is easily capable of at least 29:30, which converts to 2:20. And then heis obviously going to be wayyyyyyy better at the marathon than the 10k. Like so much better. He's an endurance beast who's body is super unprepared for 4:45 miles, so 10k is going to be a struggle. But drop the pace 20-30 secs/mile and his endurance abilities will become more evident. Again, nothing spectactular, or in the wheelhouse, but 2:17-2:18 is pretty reasonable, and probably a good bit faster if he were to devote himself to marathon trainng for a year plus.
Jakob, on the other hand, could pretty easily handle a 2:10 with fairly minimal prep. So not close. But no need to disparage Killian's talent to make that point.

Lol, who are raging like a kid? Is this really the way you try to win discussions?
Why should he have beat them if he runs 29:42? How can you say that when you have no idea about who he ran against? Do you think everyone runs their PB on any given day? You realize that Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdahl placed 32 when setting a PB of 30:32? What does tell you about the level of that race? Just a bunch of bums? The one two placements behind Kilian has a 2:15:03 marathon. Another one of those he beat is a 64:xx half marathon runner. So are you saying that these can't possibly be as good as they say, since they got beat by a bunch of norwegians and a spanish mountain runner?
By just skimming the list I recognize about 10 who have competed for norway internationally.
I have never seen any claims by Kilian about how good he is as a flat runner, I think it is as interesting as discussing how good mountain runner Jakob is. He has never ran a marathon so I guess he won't be world leading in that discipline - in fact I doubt that he would even be able to train for and compete in a serious marathon attempt without injury. The point is that it is ignorance at its best, and disingenuous bordering disrespectull at its worst to paint a picture that he was beaten by 17 nobodies at the 10k race. Calling the following "local club runners" or similar, hinting to him being beat by amateurs is from now on a plain lie:
7. Abdullahi Dahir Rabi J-XC EC silver (Beaten names as Laros and Ibler) 8. Thomas Fremo 29:17 10k 9. Weldu Negash Gebretsadik 2:09:14 marathon 10. Simen Halle Haugen 13:37.74 5k, european XC gold junior teams 11. Jonatan Vedvik 7:59.20 3000m, 3:45.45 1500 ...
Argue as much as you like that Kilian isn't this or that, but stop recycling the lie that placing behind world class runners at Hytteplanmila 2020 is some kind of mark of shame. Placing 1:40s behind an EC silver medallist, 35 seconds behind what would be a 2:09:14 marathon runner and beating a 2:15:03 marathon runner and a 64:xx half marathon runner is nothing to be ashamed of.

This Lars dude must have risen on the wrong side of the bed. He is all butthurt about Kilian not being able to run a marathon as fast as Jakob. Not a single person here has written anything about the Norwegians not being fast. In fact, they have pointed out that 17 of them in a SINGLE race were able to dust Kilian. And Norway is a small country, so it looks like just about every dedicated Norwegian can beat Kilian. There must be hundreds and thousands of Brits, Kenyans, Americans who would beat Kilian in a marathon, including many many women and high school kids. Kilian claims to do training runs at 29:42 after some absurd warmup, yet has to sprint all out in a REAL RACE to only run 30 flat. Why he bothers to tell such lies about his training we don't know. Maybe he has an inferiority complex. Jakob would beat him by two or three MILES. But we will probably never know because Kilian will probably never attempt another road race after being so humbled (at least he should be humbled) in the only one he tried. Jakob probably will run a marathon at some point, as he does XC and track and steeplechase and road races. Jakob is willing to do other events besides his specialty. Kilian, on the other hand, doesn't seem willing to further expose his true ability by trying XC or more road racing.
So Lars, please quit being such a sensitive snowflake and chill out. You seem to be taking all this very personally. We all think that Norwegians are super great. Some of us even think that Kilian is pretty super at what he does compared to the people who compete at ultra trail races and climbs, but just not ever even close to world class or national class at road racing and the marathons.

Neither Kilian nor Jakob care about this and won't be impressed you spent 20 minutes writing a novella about them. Go for a run and enjoy your day. Both are great athletes who bring a lot of joy to the sport.
Kilian isn't beating Jakob in any road marathon. Kilian isn't beating 50% of the Olympic women in a road marathon. Kilian isn't beating me in a road marathon. This whole discussion is pretty darned silly. Jakob could do what, 2:05 or 2:06, with a year of training. Kilian would probably max out at 2:25 based on what he claims to do in training, and probably slower than that based on the results of his road race.
It does seem odd that Kilian Jornet claims to knock off 29:30 10ks in training and to have some otherworldy VO2, yet has to book like crazy to hit 30 flat in a race. With his claimed VO2, 30 flat should be like taking a nap on the couch instead of a desperate fight.
Hey, he wins these up and down mountain trail runs against most of the others trying them. And that is admirable. But what are they doing? 7/8/9/10 minute miles? Whatever it is, and however hard the conditions and terrain, he just doesn't have the engine or legs to knock out 5 minute miles or even 5:20 miles for a marathon. I am sorry if that upsets you little fanboys, but that is the cold truth.
Kilian ran that 29:42 as part of his VK10K challenge. Run a Vertical KM and a 10k in under an hour combined.
he ran 29:57 on the vk, jogged down and ran 29:42 in the 10k right after.
Did he though? Any witnesses? How was it measured? If he did all this, why couldn't he even come close to that time in a race without starting with a VK? All we know for a fact is that his lifetime best is 29:59. Anything that he claims otherwise is suspect beyond belief. A reasonable person wouldn't believe that he did 29:42 after an all out VK based on what he was only able to do on a measured and timed course against other runners with witnesses and reporters watching. Maybe he needs to be exhausted by his warmup in order to run faster than 29:59? Maybe he can only run faster than 29:59 when he doesn't have other runners distracting him?

Sorry that I caught you in your lie, hope you some day find a better hobby than sitting and dreaming up reasons to hate on Kilian. As I wrote, I dont even think Kilian is able to train for and finish a marathon, so I have no idea why you write that I think he would beat Jakob, but then again - it seems like you have some tendency to live in a different reality when you hate on someone.

In an interview after that 10k he claimed that it was aerobically "easy" for him. Legs were the problem. Mans just got no speed whatsoever, which is not surprising.
Lars, I generally enjoy your posts, so I find it hard to believe that you don’t see that the other posters are just having fun getting a rise out of you now. Everyone who’s interested in the topic understands who the runners were who beat Kilian, so you don’t need to spend all this energy insisting that they shouldn’t be called club runners.
