If he weren't a miracle worker, why did all those big-time established NCAA coaches like Vin feel the need to get him fired after one year of bringing in big-time transfers and bringing a 4:01-2 guy down to 3:54?
Vin and other big-time established NCAA coaches got him fired? I thought he worked for UCLA and their administration fired him.
No matter how much you love to glaze him, Brosnan’s results were mid and his recruiting was not only unspectacular, but the few solid recruits he nabbed, he had to get by breaking the rules.
First of all, Brosnan never even had time to show his greatness. His contract was ended. Am I sad as the OP asks?? YES. It is sad when a man full of ambition and great hair are stopped in their tracks like this.
As a college coach I was not impressed with his bravado and self-importance. I have always taught coaches just coming into the profession to work hard, keep a low-profile, and when success comes your way people around you will notice. Telling people how great you are isn't something I am fond of. But I do feel very sorry for the athletes that made their choice, only to have the rug pulled out from under them. Good luck to the athletes.

Brosnan used to be friends with Mike Smith of NAU. Now they don't talk.
Why would Mike Smith, Vin Lananna, the Duke coaches and dozens of other coaches suddenly stop talking to Brosnan after being friendly with him as a high school coach????
Mike Smith of NAU and Dave Smith of OK State are great friends despite being rivals in sport. Coaches are often times good friends with their closest rivals, this is very common. These coaches were not threatened by Brosnan's mediocre results, and even if they were worried they would still be friends with him.
But clearly Brosnan was up to no good. He was doing some sketchy stuff. Ultimately, those other coaches had nothing to do with his firing. He got everyone at UCLA to hate him because of his ego and arrogance.

I crack up every time I hear people (probably mostly Brosnan himself) say people don't like him because they are jealous.
People don't like him because he's hard to like. I don't think Vin, Mike Smith, the Duke coaches were threatened or jealous of his average results. They don't like him because they got to know him.
The AD at a big D1 school like UCLA never wants problems from his cross country / assistant distance coach. Even one letter or phone call is too many. There's more to coaching at a a big time DI school than recruiting and writing training programs. Yes, it's a bit political but it always has been. UCLA was never a good fit, CSU Northridge, LB State, CS Fullerton, Cal Poly Pomona type of schools would have been better places to start..

The winning coaches would not be threatened by Brosnan’s win at all costs mentality if he was just good. But he has proven his coaching & recruiting skills are exceptional. They also knew that UCLA being in the BIGTEN could be a game changer.
Everyone at UCLA didn’t hate him, they knew - exactly - what they were getting when they hired him. They just didn’t anticipate the blowback.
Nobody over the age of 17 cares if Sean Brosnan has an NCAA D1 job. I wish him the best, but the truth is that I don't really spend any time thinking about him.
The AD took a risk allowing a HS coach to be hired and immediately found out why that was an issue. Worth the attempt I guess.

Brosnan is just a reflection our business values.
Really? You think this year proved his coaching and recruiting skills are exceptional? Yikes, the bar is low for you. I bet you think your significant other is a 10.

wow - thanks for setting me straight with such an insightful post
silly me thinking that rewriting the high school XC record books was significant

It's freakin' track and field! It only becomes political if you make it political.
If you're a successful reputable coach, and know your sh^t, no one is going to mess with you. You know why? BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOUR SH^T!, and when you know your sh^t you don't jeopardize a great opportunity by being stupid and cocky. Read the room, know your audience. If Mr. Brosnan thought he was going to take the NCAA distance running world by the balls, and step on peoples toes while doing so he was sorely mistaken.
The best HS distance coach in history and brought back UCLA from the dead. He will land someplace soon. I’m sure he will be more picky on his next choice though.
I’m betting we see in with a pro group or his own. It’s definitely more his personality.
You do know Joe Newton did it consistently for over 50 years? Joe Newton is by far the best coach in HS history.
