I think McGown has had several break throughs and frankly, dropping more time would make him suspicious, if he isn't already.
He ran 1:52.83 in late November 2020, 1:49.27 in March 2022 and 1:46.08 in March 2023. Yes he's run four 1:46.xx times this year, but how does one gain that sort of progression? I hope he's legitimate, but I for one was not expecting him on the team one year ago.
He's new to running. His season started in December, like a lot of emerging athletes he would have been chasing times early to get into stronger fields.
He's plateaued now, 15 races into the season. Hopefully the Aussie singlet lifts him to a new level, and he enjoys the experience. But either way an incredible story.
After this, a rest, then a good base block, and I predict he'll hit a new level next season.
While being a very good runner, Jess Hull has zero shot at medaling unless at least 2 of the favorites drop out of the 1,500. 5th or 6th is very possible though.

* this is me speculating.
To be fair, he's been training pretty seriously in Canberra for about six years.
Great story but he's no Donald Thomas.

I didn't realise he'd been around a while, still fairly new though.
