Miami's program problems don't start or end with the coach. Extremely expensive private school with no scholarships for track, and you're trying to convince walk-ons to stop snorting coke in the club at 2 am on Saturdays. It's a losing situation all around, never mind the terrible training environment of south Florida. They don't even field a cross country team for conference, they just send sprinters that they think can probably run an 8k without collapsing.
Same cost as most private schools now, ie. ivies, patriot, nescac. $75k annually is 4 yrs @$300k with no aid.
He was hired as a recruiting coordinator; not a coach.
So they hired a recruiting coordinator before a coach? Griff makes sense as he's a former athlete and coach, but what other intel do you have on coaching staff?
Don't know the exact timeline but he was hired (as Asst / recruiting coordinator) prior to her leaving. So, does he now get promoted?

WTF are you even talking about? Miami has $1.066m in T&F athletic scholarship money for men and $1.42m for the women. That is one of the biggest outlays in the whole country. This board is so full of half-cocked half-wits.
I don’t know a lot about the school’s distance history (maybe because there isn’t a lot to know), but judging from the comments it isn’t very good.
However, my understanding is that is a fairly selective (low admissions rate) and fun school that kids want to go to. So, it is possible that if a coach like Brosnan got good funding, he could turn things around.
weird take. Brosnan's ego is way too high to take a d2 job.
As far as I known, Hellman is still solidly in that position. Do you have an inside scoop on something?
It is only fitting a man of the Brosnan lineage, who have traditionally held the earldom of Snowdonia recapture the throne from the untrue usurper. If not the honorable lord Sean, then his brother Pierce should take up the mantle.
Until this is done, I beg unto thee: Bury my Hokas at Wounded Knee.
I always wondered why some schools such as the University of Hawaii, for example, didn't have better sports teams. It would be kind of hard to turn down a scholarship especially if they had a great coach come to town.
There's no beach to speak of in Miami anyway. You have to get out to Miami Beach, hence, the name. The barrier islands stretch many miles north, keeping the beach well away from the main coast. Miami has Biscayne Bay and gators, as well as crocs, caimans and even some monitors.
"Most of the city lies within Biscayne Bay, three to fifteen feet above sea level. The Gulf Stream keeps the area warm all year, and alligators and other oversize reptiles such as crocodiles and caiman thrive here."
The University of Miami women’s cross country team recorded its highest finish in recent history at the ACC Cross Country Championships, placing 12th Friday morning.
and yet, their coach just got the FSU job which seems like a big step up to me.
I'm no salesman for Florida. Aside from the insanely corrupt and ideological politics in a state that is in actuality exceedingly close to a 50-50 place in statewide elections (just look at the winning margins for Scott over Nelson and DeSantis over Gillum), the nice weather that everyone elsewhere talks about is confined to the winter and the weather is absolutely unbearable outside for seven months a year or more now. The traffic is terrible; there is no public transportation to speak of outside of Miami; you can't get housing insurance outside of Citizens anymore, and car insurance rates are among the highest in the country because of stratospheric accident rates and insane drivers in Miami, Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville; and pay is lousy. All that being said and the weather and lack of trails in Miami being obvious facts, Belen Jesuit dominates the state from 800m up, so it's obviously possible to have a strong distance program in that weather. If nothing else, you're going to be acclimated for hot weather races at the NCAA

the most isolated populace in the world. number one issue is that it's very expensive and time consuming having to fly to the mainland to compete.
however, you're not wrong to think that a great coach could turn things around significantly. never gonna be NCAA champs unless they import foreigners to do just that, but they could absolutely be much more competitive.
