    running is such an insular world. it's all about who is in the know but also about that fit: Holt is a good runner but he doesn't fit with OAC's vibe, it just doesn't work. Same goes for the person suggesting Mike Smith's group. Yeah it's about how fast you run (and how much value you have to a sponsor) but it's also about a vibe. Holt cannot just show up on someone's doorstep in Boulder or Flagstaff and ask to be "in"

    not saying that this is a good thing but it's the way things are. as with everything there is more than just merit at play.

    Something people haven’t mentioned is that Bayer has a flexible job working as a software developer. He likely doesn’t need as much $$$ from his pro contract as someone like Holt since it isn’t necessarily his only income.

    The biggest reason Holt does not have a contract is that he is unwilling to leave his training group and join another team

    Which is insane because Empire isn't really a top notch training group. The coach had him doing a stupid workout less than 2 weeks from USAs where he basically PRed everything from 400-1200 and blew his load too early.

    To be honest, I think they have some of the best coaches in the country. Take a quick look at what any of the athletes ran in college vs what they are running now. I started following them because of Holt, but have become huge fans of the entire group.
