A lot of folks will accept a crappy livestream in the comfort of their own home vs. spending thousands to watch it live. The large core of participants in mass running events are not fans of the sport, they are fans of mass events and their own achievements. High school athletes are teenagers that would rather go to someone's summer pool party, drink cheap beer, and make out with someone cute instead of watching a couple of 10K races on their phone.
6. Our national championships should be held in June the weekend following NCAAs. College kids would be closer to their peak fitness and the event might draw some additional spectator interest because of the college athletes.
7. As an alternative, structure the USATF Nationals differently - regional qualifying meets and every event at the nationals is a final. Cut the meet to two days, three days max. Possibly restrict entries to athletes that already have the WCS or are within a small percentage of the WCS. Every race then becomes important and we mostly avoid the weirdness of our national champ not qualifying for Worlds or The Olympics.

Only problem with number 6 is that World Athletics is now calling the shots. The national championship window this year is this weekend, or the last weekend in July. Note there are no Diamond League or Continental Tour meets this weekend or the last weekend in July. That said, USATF could put the meet the week after the NCAAs, but if there's an athlete who's got a bye to the world championships and there's a meet that weekend where they can make money, what meet is that athlete competing in? Not the USATFs.

Eugene has a lot of great things. I knew multiple groups from out east that did huge trips for the 2016 trials and they loved it. A few more who went to the 22 WCs.

But they can't spend thousands and days of travel to do that every year. The amenities and lodging aren't great. The track meet isn't always that fun- long and boring.

I think you are just seeing people stopping to show up over time. It isn't very fun.

Great point regarding backstretch having no shade! That was a major flaw in the design of “new” Hayward. I think another factor in low attendance is that many of distance-loving fans that turned out for so many years have gotten older/passed on/don’t want to deal with current airfares, hotel prices, etc. I’m one of those fans and for the above reasons - Hayward has lost it’s luster for me.

USATF fired most of it's Communications Department at the end of 2022. Nike does it now. USATF.tv aka Runnerspace is owned by Nike. Hope this helps.

I live in NYC, am surrounded by liberal coworkers, and when I mention I have family in portland/oregon and am going to visit, they all sort of shudder a bit "isnt like...super super far out liberal there? I could never live there"

not making this up. the view of oregon even amongst liberals outside the west coast is not good.

I would fly in to see big time T& F if I could also run some ULTRA XC 5 to 20K high quality courses. Especially if they were structured like a multi day stage race. With single day and multi day awards. You got the natural beauty with rolling hills it just needs to be developed and promoted.

It's a 4 day meet not 5. Must be public school math.

According to broadcast partner NBC Peacock, it's a 3-day meet. Tonight's live coverage starting at 6 pm EDT is billed as "Day 1." I agree with an earlier poster, any prelim rounds should be conducted off-site a week or two prior, at 2-4 regional qualifier meets. PPV the stream from those meets and have it finals only at Hayward (or Hilmer Lodge or Drake Stadium) for a 2-day championship meet of 4-6 hour sessions. Improve and concentrate the quality of the competition for the marquee event. People just aren't going to pay huge sums for something diluted and spread out over four days, not when it's a level C sport at best.

I agree about the weather. This time of year Indianapolis is like most of Ohio that isn’t up near Lake Erie - hot & humid.

There'll be more people attending the USATF Nationals for Masters athletes in North Carolina than this meet in Eugene. Why? Greensboro is a lot closer to major metropolitan areas.

The time zone is a problem too. So the sport's best-known star Sha'Carri is to run in the finals tonight and it's slated for MIDNIGHT, Eastern time which is 60% of the country. They need to have events earlier or move the meet to the middle of the country or East Coast.

It was here in 2006-07, at IUPUI stadium (same place as '87 Pan AM games, '88 Oly Trials). That stadium has since been renovated and I don't know the status of the track.

What I saw in SF last time I was there was 100x worse than anything I’ve seen in NYC.

T&F is a 3rd Rate sport relegated to little stadiums with few seats hidden away in small towns no one knows of.

The unattainable dream is to make L.A. Pro Sports money 100 times what we get.

Hollywood TV Corporations in Burbank, Century City, Playa Vista, etc. pay $950,000 to NBA Rookies while Diamond League 1st Place finishers get $10,000.

That means the top sprinters in the world make 1/100th of an NBA Rookie who sits on the bench.
