Athing's path to success has always been unorthodox. I witnessed her first ever club track race at Northeast HS in Philly. She won the 1500 in lane two the entire race...in sweatpants!
Why was Athing Mu in lane two? Was there another runner in lane one the whole time? Or she was just running in lane two all by herself?
She is getting better, only runs in the outside of lane one now!

She also never won a single HS State Title in NJ...because she did run any meets for her HS.
With that said, her handlers always seem to make the right call.

Like getting her to run the Millrose mile?
The Millrose mile was Athing's idea. She really believed that she could compete with the best milers in the country, and admitted she was really upset when she discovered she couldn't.
I don't think for one second that her coach thought Athing was going to be competitive. He's not an idiot. But Athing was a pro at that point, no longer a student athlete, so he couldn't really stop her.
I would have done the same thing if I was her coach. Let her fail at the mile and get it out of her system. It worked. She forgot all about the 1500/mile and went back to the 800 and won the World Championships.
First of all Jelimo is a biological male. Not everyone is aware of that. Sorry to burst your bubble.
Second, Jelimo's 52.14 (June 14, 2012) was only 3 weeks before Jelimo ran an 800 in 1:56.76 (July 7, 2012) . So no, your Jelimo reference does NOT mean Keely can run 1:52.

So her coach doesn't have any real influence over her decisions then? A bit difficult for him to "make the right call".

Hodgkinson should stick to the 400m for the remainder of her U23 career (2-3 more years?); gives her something to do in that age group without getting bored and also 400m is very relatable to her pet event so she can add that to her regular season schedule.
Let's be honest, on track surfaces and with spikes from a decade ago, her current PR is only about 1:56.25...
So El G was really running 3:24 in the new spikes and tracks, Komen 7:16 and of course Kratochvilova has already run 1:52. What a bunch of slowpokes today's runners are.
