I’m not sure O’Sullivan’s tactics are any more aggressive than the ‘pushing, squeezing, and elbowing’ you’ll see from the other waifs. The difference is that she is so much bigger, and her compact stride works for maintaining her leverage in those situations.
Wasn’t O’Sullivan’s mother a pretty aggressive runner back in her day when she was running on the Irish National team? Perhaps she picked up that aggression. She’s also bigger & stronger than her mother - something she picked up from her Aborigine father. Her grandfather was also a big guy as a keeper for the Irish National soccer team.
There’s nothing wrong with being aggressive as long as fouls are not committed.
Tuohy get out fast and try to control the pace, settling in after 200-300 and seeing if the pack tries to go around. Then a long grind to the finish over the final 2 laps.
O'Sullivan has got the rollerderby/high post build and will take the inside lane in 2nd or 3rd and hope to run down the leaders over the final stretch.
Flockhart and the Oregon women, stay out of harms way and pick them off over the final 150.
final time? Anyone's guess but honest enough, don't think it's going be 4:10s or slower, more like 4:05-4:09 depending on when the moves are made. 66s and and 46 would be 4:04, that seems a bit of a stretch, so more like 66s-67s, and a 46, 4:05.8, just dipping under the meet record.
I wasnt sure but it did look like despite the track being wide open she passed her very very closely and maybe with a little nudge. Big kick for her though she stayed too far back - got boxed in nicely. Maybe after this race they told her to be more aggressive.
Love the logic being used on this site. Apparently it will be hot which will have a major affect on Tuohy during the race...but not the other runners. O'Sullivan will be body checking other runners...so victory is assured. Tuohy (4:06:84) won't be able to compete as the other girls (4:08+) have better 400/800 speed...but this is a 1500 race isn't it.
Anyway, in 90 - 100 degree heat, it will be tough for any runner to get close to 4:07/4:08. A faster pace early removes much of the kick speed from many racers....maybe not all.
I agree that Tuohy takes the lead before 400 and likely pushes it early. No other girl has been below 4:08, so she has the advantage of either pushing early, or ramping up much sooner than others want. I would expect by 800m Tuohy is looking to see who can keep up.
I have no idea who wins, but I certainly know who I would be placing a bet on. Should be a good race.
Winning the 5k afterwards will be tough...regardless of how Tuohy places in the 1500. That heat will be oppressive

I don’t think anyone is saying victory is assured for O’Sullivan but if the race gets tactical and comes down to who is able to secure the best position with the least affected run she has an advantage based on what we’ve seen. Nobody seems to have a Nathan Green type finish though certainly Howell is to be respected and Tuohy has great strength which could show if she grabs hold of the race early.
Thanks for loading that. From the beginning, O’Sullivan never looked to be in it, and with 400m to go, their was anguish on her face, and her stride looked, even more so, like she was hobbling. She was now way out of it with 300m to go.
But then, something happened with about 200m to go. It was as if a switch was turned on, and she suddenly found a new gear (or two) with probably the fastest 200m close of the field.
not disagreeing at all...yet find it humorous that all this hype is being made about how physical O'Sullivan is. Never heard those comments about her before from any other race... and running that style would put her in just as much risk of tripping. She is a great runner and has a real shot of winning or certainly top 3. Both her and Howell are legit, as are the Oregon runners.
I expect that by 800m Tuohy will start asking the question of who wants to go with her...then it simply comes down to who is feeling the best that day. A 1.5 second PB advantage is huge...but any faltering by Tuohy and there will be runners looking to pounce.

The strategy for Tuohy has to be to run a fast, 4:05-4:06 race. If she leaves it for the last lap she will get caught, and possibly body checked into the infield. :)
