If we continue to allow men (by sex) to participate as women, then women’s sports will over the long run deteriorate. Women's sports don't exist to validate gender identity -- they exist because elite women, in most physical sports, will lose to sub-elite high school boys every time (and, in contact sports, would be in unreasonable danger of serious injury).
The effects of hormonal transition are significant, but the evidence points toward trans women retaining a significant advantage if they transition after puberty, as shown repeatedly by trans women who were no-names among men before transition suddenly contending for and often winning championships at their level (high school, NCAA, etc.) even after hormonal transition (like Lia Thomas, who had been on hormones for three years before winning the NCAA women's 500y freestyle title).
I want trans people to have the same benefits of athletic competition as everyone else, but just repeating "trans women are women" and not considering the reality of the situation is the wrong way to get this, not least because it won't work.

I would consider myself to be a bit “liberal” and find more truth on the left than the right. But I don’t believe, and I’ve never met anyone who believes that transfemales competing against females is a good idea and or fair. I‘m not sure that anyone can say that it’s part of the liberal or democratic agenda to promote this. It’s more about figuring out what to do in this situation rather than promoting it.

The kid should know better and know that he's stealing experiences from girls, but it's likely that he does not know better. The adults in his life have affirmed and encouraged the delusion that he should compete against girls. They are to blame for this nonsense.
