i think musk has a point, but not sure about calling it "morally bad" that is going pretty deep.
on the other hand, you could see it turning into a case of the haves and have nots. i think this is fine, but there are sensitive people out there who would say it is not fair that 50% of the population has to leave their house and family to work while the other half gets to work from the comfort of their own home without having to send their kids off. It is not a stretch to imagine some people comparing this to slavery, especially if there is one particular culture that gets to stay home, while some other cultures are out busting their butts away from home.
that's not my viewpoint, but you know there are people who will go there.
So it's about jealousy.
People have to go into work to build things or stock things or handle the register - in air conditioning and heat. While others are out working in the elements all day. Is that fair?
Life isn't fair. People get paid differently. Is Musk suggesting that he and all of his working get paid the exact same wage? That would be fair.
I do agree with you that some people are seeing that way. They are jealous people.
jealous people or people looking for a cause. "activist types." there always has to be something to fix.
Elon is an ultra productive, once in a generation type of lunatic work a holic. Those types of people are rare, but they can change society. He has done that through his hard work. That will NOT work for most individuals. There are millions of U.S. workers that prefer or want to work from home, with no obvious detriment to their employer. That’s fine, and helps those people live balanced lives. There are also plenty of workers that won’t be productive at home. That’s just the way it is… Elon isn’t exactly right or wrong in this.
this is the most balance post ive read, and yet somehow manages to get vote downs. What could somebody possibly have a problem with in this post?
Because most people have realized at this point that Musk is a liar whose claims about his own work ethic are exaggerated. People who actually work 120 hours a week aren't constantly on Twitter or playing hours and hours of Elden Ring. You can keep imagining him to be superman if you want, but don't pretend like you're being the rational one.
The haters don't want to listen Elon is saying. It's time for people to learn some compassion. Think about hotel maids. Think about warehouse employees. These people are going into work, in person every. single. day. It is very unfair to them that the rest of are allowed to work from home. It is messed up. In fact, to take Mr. Musk's sage assertion to it's logical conclusion, it is also very unfair and, in fact, immoral for laptop "workers" to accept higher wages, fewer working hours, or longer vacations than blue collar workers. Everyone should be equal. (Ever heard of the constitution??) Of course, there must be some exceptions for bosses/owners and upper management.
As someone who still went into work at the peak of COVID lockdowns I loved it. So much less traffic and bs. Air was much cleaner and way less noise due to less cars on the road. I say let as many mfers stay home as you can. We strain our transportation infrastructure and make lives worse everyday for no reason.
I get why lots of managers want their employees in the office at least part time. Intimacy is a premium product after all. the “coffee break meetings” are useful for innovation and knowledge transfer.
I understand the “fairness” issue he raises but disagree that it rises to the level of morality. Different jobs require different levels of engagement: some jobs require lots of travel, some jobs require being in an office and some jobs can be done from home. Life can never be fair
There are things I could propose to do for my company that I choose not to because then I would have to come into the office. A nicer way of saying it is that I am directing my career in a direction so that I can continue working from home.

i don't care about the number. i doubt he actually counts. but if you think he is not working his @$$ off, you are delusional. people like musk don't ever turn their brains off.

It's not a brain. It's a LLM AI posing as a right wing mover and shaker.
Obviously there are many jobs that can't be done remotely while others can be. There are some jobs that can be done in an air conditioned office and others that have to be done outside no matter how boiling or freezing the weather is. If you extend Musk's line of reasoning you could conclude that it's immoral to have a comfortable indoor job when others don't have one.
I don't see a moral dimension here. But if I want to create one I'll argue that in a time where it's believed that burning hydrocarbons is a threat to our continued existence it's morally wrong to force people who could work from home to commute to a workplace, most likely by driving, and burn fuel unnecessarily.
In general, productivity flatlines with working at home. I also miss the company during breaks. The office is empty and totally depopulated much of the year.
I'm highly motivated despite being at home. At my job 30 hours per week of real work would do a passable job and let you fly under the radar. I work very hard and probably at least 50 hours. For that huge amount of extra effort I get an outstanding performance rating and about $5k annual bonus. Many people feel it's not worth it and purely on the cash reward basis it obviously isn't. I find what I do interesting and important.
Is it moral to spend 1 hour each way driving into an office to do a job that you can do remotely?
Is it moral when in office employees spend more time gossiping at the water cooler than doing productive work?
I don't see this as a morality issue, but a convenience one.
Water cooler? How old are you?
let’s be honest, people who work from home are not as productive as they claim to be. With that being said, I don’t blame them for choosing to do it if they have the option

Why do think there should be exceptions?
Why do you think differences in income fair, but differences in workplace not fair?
Working from home is bad for car sales. Really bad.
Musk's primary business depends on car sales.
Musk denigrates working from home as "morally bad".
See a connection?
Yeah, the guy sells cars that are IDEAL for commuting and thinks working from home is bad. He needs a muzzle.
Hey, how about this: Self-driving cars so that the people getting pulled back into the office can actually work (answering emails, making phone calls, reading whatever) during their ride in to the workplace.
So, with this in mind, proper response would be:
"Elon, build me a god-damned self-driving car that doesn't get into accidents and run people over, and we'll find a way to commute back into the workplace and not make it a giant waste of time! And what's taking you so long?!"
