The store I shopped at today must read LetsRun. As I went to the self checkout with my 6 items in a basket, no other customers were their. The attendant even came over right after I scanned the beer to ok it cause I'm old. And to top it off the credit card machine didn't give me errors. A 10/10 experience.
I gotta admit when I get in a checkout line I'm doing mental gymnastics on the checker and the customers to check for outliers. You know the chatty checkers, the blue hair lady that suddenly realized that she needs her checkbook to pay for her ensure and depends after everything has been totaled, the other lady that's paying cash and is looking for those 69 cents in coins in her overstuffed coin purse or the bottom of her oversized purse, the other old dude that wants a price check on his store brand raisin bran that was on sale last week, the food stamp lady that's also buying cigarettes and lotto cards and can't believe her debit card is overdrawn. You know, the usual line cloggers.

In the UK we have self scan where you register your payment card and get a hand held scanner, then you just scan stuff as you get it off the shelves and bag it as you go

I'm happy with the machines.
Like the OP, it's the braindead actions of other people that irk me.
Personally, I'd pay to not have to interact with other humans while shopping.
To hell with the machines. I go to the same store and see the same customers. I have had interaction with many and it brightens the day. After a hard day of work, the last thing that I want to do is have to scan my groceries. When you know the check out people, they know when you don't need to be carded for alcohol. The world is going to hell with too much automation, virtual this and that, AI is gonna save the world. "Ain't nothing like the real thing baby..."
This is not about grocery store prices, but those who clog up the self checkout line:
-About 15 items doesn't mean 30 or more, know your maths
-Don't teach your kid how to scan when there are 10 people in line
-Wait to talk on your phone until AFTER left the stands
-Bag as you go
-Use a basket, you don't need a big a$ cart for bread and a can of soup
-Write down the produce code, instead of scrolling through the photos and not know the diff between a russet and a gold

This is the most unbelievable YouTube channel in the world. I need to see more videos... My guess is he no longer does these as people have gone insane, but who knows.
I will say as a former bagger/cart jockey for multiple grocery chains in high school, the only part of my day that was even slightly enjoyable was going to get the carts from the far end of the lot. It is a hazard to cars, true, but I LOVED it when they told me to go get a cart like 800 meters away and I could take my time and enjoy the peace and quiet.
Haven't read all the replies, but I am sure that Amazon pioneered stores a couple of years ago with no check-out necessary - you just put the items in your cart and walk out the door. Built in scanners bill you for it. And this was at least a couple of years ago. I haven't heard about them recently, but that would solve a lot of these problems, wouldn't it?

I am deeply deeply concerned that this self checkout is creeping toward the only way to check out. I have 2 Krogers and a wal mart that have 1 check out line with a human or less. Its coming. Not sure what they do about the customers who are like 90, or have handicap. Deli is pre slicing everything....its coming.

Count, I agree with you on both points. I think teaching your kids how to operate a machine that they will later have to use in life is, in fact, consideration for others. Don't forget that the children are humans who need to learn as well. I like seeing parents actually parenting their kids. If they are just letting them play with the machine, that is another story.
