That is a pretty stupid comment but I’m accustomed to reading stupid comments from you.
I don't comment much so I do not see where you are coming from and this was a rare one where I was likely off the mark with Sumner. I do believe that Flatt would have been a 1:45 guy last year had he graduated in December and headed to Ole Miss while Vanhoy and the 2022 distance squad was there. But he was chasing the record and it is a formidable one. As a previous poster opined, Granville went downhill from there, but apparently with a lot of extenuating circumstances from his previous training/family situation in high school.
I thought this last year, but kept pretty quiet. Flatt was as old as most College Frosh last year. That's just a fact. He ran in a lot of good spots to run fast and he did. But, what was his real upside? He is not an amazingly fast 400M runner and he is not an 800/1500 type either. He split 48.4 on DMR at Penn with a running start. So? Where is the improvement coming from..he is a "one event" guy. Not that some also are not or were not, but, usually most elite 800M guys can run either a solid 1500 or really really fast on the relay at least. I doubt he will run much faster than he already has, that probably is not a popular view..but it is what I think. I have been wrong, plenty..lol.
Of course they were. At least half the lib fanboys were stomping their fungus laden feet that he was going to be the special one. There was talk of 1:42. 1:41. I know a lot of those libs are changing their handles now because they can see he's not going to achieve anything of significance. They want to hide
How does rooting for Sumner make someone a liberal? Do all conservatives uniformly hate him? Why?
dude looked a 26 year old as a high schooler. most top distance runners and mid distance guys look like they are 12 in high school. he was the rare exception.
Cade *MIGHT* be a flash in the pan. However, he has immense talent and if he can get healthy and confident he'll be back. Even if he simply ran 1:45-1:46 his whole career he'd be a great collegiate athlete. Will he let the pressure get to him? I doubt it. I think his affliction will ultimately come down to patience.
I think he'll be fine. Just needs the right situation. He was hungry after just missing the HS record last year and I'm sure he pushed it a little much in training. Shoot, for a kid running 15 miles per week in high school he may have bumped up to 25 and crashed and burned. Someone that undertrained is going to need some adjustment time.

They were predicting him to break the American record and make the US team last year----NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a fan and want to see what he can accomplish, but the AZZHOLES on here have no clue. I wish him the best and much success.
Cade Flatt doesn’t need to waste his energy on SECs. He didn’t even cut his mileage for this meet. His focus is on Budapest as it should be. 1:50 now but he hasn’t even touched speed and was tempoing it at mile pace.
It seemed pretty obvious that he didn't have the maturity to smoothly transition from waxing everybody in HS to attending classes, getting worked in practice, and being marginal to even make finals in college. Perhaps the attitude adjustment is ongoing but, without it, he will waste his talent.

I didn't know Flatt was that slow over 400. So he's not even as fast over 400 as Nick Symmonds (47.45), and with a running start. Symmonds ran 1:42 off his relatively slow 400 but he also ran a 3:34 1500. So Flatt's not as fast as Symmonds and isn't likely strong enough to run anything close to Symmonds over 1500. As others have said, not a lot of upside there.

The hypothetical upside was that he was doing like less than 10mpw yet could still run 1:46/4:1X, and that training like an "actual 800m runner" would make him a global superstar. His HS training probably wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. Obviously he has gains to make on the endurance side, but if it comes at some cost to his speed (which is great, but not otherworldly) - no guarantee of payoff.

Symmonds was 28 when he ran that 47.45. Flatt is a lot faster than Symmonds at the same age.
There is no reason whatsoever to think that he is done. He is 19 or 20 years old and ran maybe 5-10 mpw in high school at a program with an inexperienced coach and a handful of athletes. There's only one way he won't improve markedly, injuries. It isn't too surprising that he got numerous injuries this year from training at a much higher level. I believe that Van Hoy, had he stayed, would have had him running fast already, but you can't rate his speed based on a 48 he ran while injured. You need to have patience. A lot of athletes regress in their freshmen year and the NCAA is absolutely rife with athletes who take the training up three notches at once, party too hard (I have no idea whether he did this), don't get enough sleep, and get injured one or more years. He should probably transfer to a coach that knows how to deal with an athlete of his type, but I would be shocked if he doesn't run 1:44-45 in college, despite this year being a total loss. For one, he never should have tried to train and race through the injuries for Millrose.
