Yeah don't mind this -- refreshing to see someone own it & call out the weak T&F excuses. But 3 years isn't a ton of time & testing in triathlon is not great. He could continue to dope, come back, and start winning races. He also won one of the biggest races of the season last year & got $100k for 1st. Prize money went 20 deep so 20 athletes were cheated out of a better pay day.
What concerns me here are his connections. I appreciate the honesty -- now name names. You didn't do this on your own. Where did you get the drugs from? Who helped you? Who else is doping? His coach was Mikal Iden, brother of Gustav Iden, training partner of Kristian Blumenfelt. He was Lionel Sanders' training partner leading into Kona last year. All of those people need to say something convincing to distance themselves from this.

a couple of you all have brought up how Lionel needs to comment; he did well before that podcast came out:
I agree that for his honesty they should reduce his ban to encourage others that get caught cheating to be honest about it. He would always be on the radar and most likely to never try it again.

Not really an excuse, rather an explanation to his followers about his state of mind when he decided to dope. He's not asking for the punishment to be reduced; he's not claiming the test is wrong.
Within the context of positive drug tests, this is refreshing to see.
Of course it is an excuse. " [excuse] VERB attempt to lessen the blame attaching to (a fault or offense); seek to defend or justify:"
It is quite literally the dictionary definition of an excuse. I don't blame him for it, it's a rational thing to want to do, but it is disheartening that people are so used to total garbage lies like bad burritos that they consider "Yes I did it but it was because I had a down period and was stressed" as not an excuse. Everyone can agree that doping is essentially the most inexcusable sin in sport, and professionals are keenly aware of this. When they decide to dope, they don't forget that, they choose to dope in spite of it. If you don't acknowledge this or add in some justification, you are making excuses. Anyway at least he didn't lie upon getting caught.
Theres a difference between telling us the reasons he used to justify it to himself at the time and making excuses. He's telling you what drove him to it. Rational or not. And then he's taking full responsibility.
Owning up to it doesn’t mean sh*t, he’s still a cheater and a disgrace to the sport.
I agree. Maybe if he had as much to lose as Houlihan and the resources she had to challenge the ban, he would be shouting his innocence from the mountain tops.
I don’t know why people would expect him to turn into a snitch. Isn’t that like saying, “they made me do it”?
I respect the guy for owning up to what he did. He knows it wasn't right and isn't going to try to fraud his fans into thinking the science behind testing was botched. Hopefully he finds his way, one that doesn't involve breaking rules.
For him bringing "burrito" and "covid test" references was not classy at all. He says, I cheated but my cheating is not as bad as those two others; btw you can't compare Zane to Shelby - one admitted to cheating vs the other. Zane actually explained why he used covid excuse.
His honesty is refreshing, but is he really being fully honest? Perhaps he's aware that he could be threatened to pay back some prize money he won before. So perhaps this apology is covering to save him the money he earned because that's all he cared about anyways.
It's a red flag that he won a huge race but claims he was clean for that one. But perhaps he was just in a rut afterwards and wanted a quick/easy return to his previous capabilities. Only he knows the truth. But since he lies once, why believe anything he says?
I do think some epo cheats have some valuable intel as far as the process, the mindset, others who've used it secretly and why. It makes more sense when they accuse a fellow competitor because that's the most believable thing they can tell.

Totally agree. His response was beyond calculated so that he can keep his IM Mont Tremblant & PTO US Open prize $$$. I appreciate not being fed a burrito excuse but the reality is that he can sit for 3 years, come back, and start winning races again. 3 years is not enough time. Appreciate Lionel & others like Ben Hoffman (shared below) sounding off. Chartier was connected to some of the biggest names in the sport. Testing needs to be upped. Ironman is sort of taking the Nike approach to doping. Their goal is to make $$$, except they're not a shoe/clothing sponsor -- they're putting on the races. They don't test at every race with prize money. Tons of good pros will never even get tested. Age group doping is a problem too.
Im sure he looked for a way to fight (he mentions contacting lawyers) but he had absolutely nothing to stand on. May as well "come clean" at that point.
Collin isn't being honest at all. It is abundantly clear among the pro triathlon community that he has been abusing PEDs for significantly longer than he has claimed. He is lying about when he started, who is involved, and his motivation behind the decision.
The podcast is horrific. No emotion or remorse. Story and timeline is filled with holes and contradictions. Refuses to say anything besides the typical doper excuses. He clearly wants a pat on the back as he walks away from the destruction he caused. AND he is keeping the money he stole. He didn't even have the decency to alert sponsors, coach, organizations before blindsiding everyone.
Great to see big name pros condemning him so publicly. Its something we didn't see in the Shelby case. Only person backing him seems to be fellow cheat Lauren Goss. Gives hope for a sport that has a lack of testing.
Everyone should watch Lionel Sanders' video. Best summation of sport/doping I've ever seen.

Nah, he succeeded in making you feel more positive about his actions.
You've already put him on your Xmas list.
Simple thing - he's a doper, and will never be heard from again
