Italian runner found dead ripped apart by brown bear on trail. Apparently Italy has a population of a few hundred brown bears. I never understood people who hike or run alone on trails in bear country. Two people are always a must and one has to carry pepper spray, two being preferable. I wouldn’t go hiking in bear trails without a companion and pepper spray and a shotgun.
I lived in a city that's half redneck and half ghetto. Off leash pit bulls were everywhere and most weren't well trained - I had to keep my runs limited to a very small part
Did you ever have to use mace/pepper spray? In my experience slowing down and not running gets rid of the full attack mode on dogs, at that point if you decide to use mace you'll have a clear shot to the eyes/mouth.
I dealt with an encounter by a Mastiff this way and now on the same route it doesn't come within 100' of me.
Bear spray is much more effective against bears than guns are. Additionally, bear spray is much harder to injure others unintentionally, lighter and cheaper, easier to use, and less dangerous to the bear than guns are.
Why would one use a gun when one could use bear spray?
I dunno, here’s a thought and legit question…how close to the bear do you have to be for Bear B Gone spray to work? Is it like a perfume mister or can you turbo-fire that stuff from 40 feet away?
Was the bear tested for cocaine use or other performance enhancing drug?
It depends. According to Rule 4.2.3 section 5, if the bear out-sprints the runner in the final 50 meters before mauling commences, resulting in death, the bear is subject to testing. However, Rule 0.0.P.S. states if the runner unintentionally runs into the bears mouth, claws or honey pot, and the collision results in unintentional death of the runner, the bear was in the right and not subject to testing and deceased runner shall henceforth be referred to as an idiot.
So, i'm riding my bicycle and i see a lion. My brain thinks this can't be real because there are no lions in Southern Ontario Canada. I'm on a rail trail and after a few seconds i realize i'm at the back of a small zoo. You couldn't see the grey metal enclosure fence. I'm still a little nervous when i ride on that trail. The one day i heard that lion roar from about half a mile away kinda scary.
Ultimately this bear will have to be put down anyway …..
It’ll be difficult, but as usual the agencies involved will kill some random bear and claim they killed the correct one. They have no way of verifying that UNTIL they have a dead bear.
Worse yet, bears do NOT need to be put down after an attack. There’s not a single example anywhere of bears becoming some kind of man-eating bear after killing a person (I didn’t read the piece, but this bear very likely didn’t eat anyone). They’re not big cats .. but gov’t agencies always attempt to calm the populace and kill a bear to appease folks who dont know better.

Typically about 30’, depending on wind, etc. It’s just a highly powered, industrial strength pepper spray.
This isn't a movie or a game. This is my life and these are my friends. We have to protect our friends and be their voice because nobody will take the time to listen to them.

Strap a knife to your bike. Tarzan could kill lions with a knife.

You're an idiot. If it weren't for firearms, your ancestors would never have survived long enough to reproduce so that you can now spew your stupidity. Judging by all the down votes for anybody that advocates firearms for self-defense, it's no wonder anti-gun activists remain the preferred #1 target for criminals.
The 50 grizzly reference was making the point that driving is sold as more dangerous only because of the sheer number of cars on the road at the same time as you. The only reason statistics say it is safer around a griz or a shark is that you are not going to see them everything you are on a trail or in the ocean. But the second you are 100 feet from a grizzly what are the odds then? Are they the same odds of every time you go for a drive and you encounter another vehicle?
It’s a retลrded comparison because the average person spends about 10,000,000 times more time driving that they do running on a trail in bear country, so, of course, they’re more likely to be killed driving. By this logic, people are more likely to die doing pretty much anything including sitting on the can, cooking, or mowing the lawn.
That's right. If you routinely run in bear country, your chance of getting mauled is actually rather high. (Most maulings do not result in death, though. And, more people get killed by moose than by bears.) But very few people routinely run in bear country. For that tiny group of people it's important to think about bear spray, running with someone else, etc.
I'm surprised to learn that anywhere in Italy qualifies as bear country, though.

You three are afraid of your own shadows. Cowards.
I ran for years in California where there are mountain lions. Most wild animals don't want to tangle with a human. This is probably one "problem bear." It's good to be aware and take precautions in certain situations, but I've run on really remote trails and would never give that up. Life is for living.
The most nervous I've been during a run was running on a trail during hunting season in Minnesota. I cut that short. Humans are dangerous.
It would be nice if places like that had boxes at the trail heads with bear spray, on your honor to return.
It would protect in the short term and influence the bears long term behavior.
Bear spray is quite expensive ($40+ per can). People wouldn't return it.
I think it could work. The trails around me are almost littered with bear spray. It's one of those things that people accidently drop or lose, kind of like those winter traction devices, gloves, and earpods. I found maybe 3 cans last year, and have a couple cans in the car, and a bunch on a shelf at home. I don't actually carry them around running though.
It's a great tragedy. It seems that the guy just found the bear around a bend so he suddenly found it in front of him . They have found a stick with bloodstains. So probably the guy tried to fight or to keep the bear at distance. It seems that the bear dragged him 70 meters down the trail. In Italy in the national park where I use to run there are thousand of fallow deer and if you run they make you get within 20 meters of them and then they walk away. Then there are hundreds of Boars. These can be dangerous if they have puppies. Or if you have dog. They have attacked some dogs. The other day I was running in one road in the middle of the forest , and as always when I run in wild places all my senses were on alert ,a beautiful road where nobody goes.Suddenly in the distance I saw a big boars about 300 hundreds meters from me running in my direction. I just turned my back and increase my pace from 5'/km to 3'30"/km thank god I was still far when I saw him. Then there are 11 wolves they put them to control the fallow dear population . I just saw them only once but not in the forest , it was one morning I was drivin on a tarmac road bordering the forest and they just cross the main road.
