That's the Ravens advantage, they have a great young backup they are happy to roll with, Tyler Huntley. Same type player as Jackson, better passer, better intangibles, slower runner. Due Jackson injuries, he already has plenty of game experience.
Tyler Huntley: 3-5
Lamar Jackson: 45-16
So much for "intangibles".
I didn't necessarily say he is better than Lamar, but that's who they will go with, if Lamar walks. They are basically saying we'll be happy to pay cheap for Huntley and take 2 #1 picks if Lamar can get his fully guaranteed contract elsewhere. Huntley is good.
If Lamar did not use an agent, this makes no sense to me.
My close law school friend is married to one of the better agents out there, a practicing lawyer who fills the role of a full time agent. It is quite certain Jackson knows him as he is prominent in the African American community and the NFL (he has a diverse set of clients, though) and structuring a deal to be tax preferred and long term revenue based could easily pay for itself in terms of agency costs. This agent started out life as a tax and corporate lawyer for a big firm in NY and his skill is what you need when going up against the legal and financial talent the teams send to the table. This is not meant to make a sweeping conclusion about Lamar Jackson but representation in this context just works out better for the athlete. In his defense, Jackson seems to have some leverage here in the immediate as the alternatives at the position for a typically well run franchise are not on the horizon. But the leverage does appear to run out - not great for a long term deal which in the NFL is a way to beat the odds.
The logic to not using an agent is that the first 5 years of a highly drafted qb are locked in:
yr 1, yr2, yr3, team option yr 4, franchise tag yr5. All the amounts are fixed so why pay agent 10% if he can't negotiate anything.
Jackson will next sign a deal between 3 and 10 years at $40-$50 million per year. These parameters are already set w/ the giants signing midling qb D Jones at $40 mil/yr, A Rogers playing at $50 mil/yr and P Mahomes on 10 yr deal w/ chiefs. The only sticking point is he wants the contract fully guaranteed like the DeSean Watson contract w/ Browns and league owners en masse do not want to do this.
Will be interesting if he can get a new deal this year, or if he plays his yr 5 under franchise tag.
If he gives in on guarantees, he could sign for 3 yrs $135 million tomorrow afternoon w/somebody, without agent.
Obviously an agent could help now at this juncture, but worth $4-5 million per year when market is set? Also if he used his agent for deals w/sponsors etc., he'd get more value from an agent.
What are the options if Lamar walks? Some scrub qb. Pay him

You’re kidding right? The ravens offense without Lamar is a bunch of guys getting smacked. He literally is their offense.

It’s pretty hard to read this whole situation as anything other than collusion by owners of teams who don’t want another Watson style guaranteed contract. Are we really seriously thinking the Panthers and Commanders are better off with their net negative starters than a league MVP? Don’t care if he has an agent or not, in a quarterback centric league, Lamar makes a team like that better.
To be fair, some of the negative leaks would be mitigated by a good agent. But highly doubt there would be a much different outcome.
Also, the OP on this thread is clearly a racist a**.

Yes it is in all of the owners interest to not give a deshawn Watson deal to Lamar that doesn’t mean collusion
The other thing to consider is the Ravens can (and probably will) match whatever the commanders, falcons, etc. match so why would you spend the effort negotiating with Lamar in what seems from the outside to be a difficult negotiation when you don’t get the player at the end.
The Ravens reluctance when it comes to Lamar may be due to the fact that he is a running quarterback in a league that is absolutely to brutal to these types of players.
Lamar is sturdier than, say, RGIII, but management may want to hold off on a long-term contract due to Lamar's physical wear and tear.
Especially a completely guaranteed one. The only reason Cleveland gave that clown a contract like that is they’re desperate to not continue to suck so bad.
Lots of very dumb people make loymta of money. Intellectual intelligence is separate from earning potential. Many athletes are both highly paid and dumb intellectual.
Jackson seems like both an idiot and rich. He isn't a thinker that reasons through problems like a Brady or Manning. He relies on the primitive brain and talent but those kind of players have shorter careers.

It's actually a pretty simple negotiation. Years, salary, % guaranteed. Why do it? You either get your qb, or you force an opponent to use a lot of their salary cap on their qb. (I don't think ravens will match. Historically, they like a cheap qb, so they can spend on defense.)
Ryan Fitzpatrick is a very intelligent QB, he has the highest test score, out of the Ivy League. Now compare his college/NFL numbers to that Heisman winning/NFL MVP winning Lamar Jackson. Look at comp%, yards, TD/INT ratio, passer rating, of course the rushing it's all Jackson and not really close. Playing QB isn't about how smart ya are it's about how good are you at playing QB.
Jackson is an amazing athlete and his stats back that up, career comp% 63.7, passer rating 96.7 that is great stuff. Look at our Ivy Leagurer at 60.7 and a wimpy 82.3. But he is smart, so what big deal.
Lamar Jackson Heisman winner, NFL MVP, multi millionaire, but bet he has never heard of John Steinbeck or Sinclair Lewis or Zane Grey, hell....James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison.

Ironically, RG3 was sturdier than Lamar. You remember he was a hs national champ in 400h. He was a sturdy guy, who suffered a routine injury. Tried to play on it and turned it into a career limiting injury. Brady, sturdy guy, missed a full year. Rothisburger, sturdy guy missed 2 full seasons. P Manning, sturdy guy, missed a full season.

I mostly agree with this. I would call it more of a group think than organized collusion. I don't think anyone is texting each other agreeing not to sign him or anything like that. The reality is that the other 31 owners looked at the Browns and realized how stupid the Watson contract was.
The other aspect is that anyone who signs him on the non-exclusive tag has to pay him big money AND give up two first round picks. The picks are the deal breaker in my mind. That's the biggest "collusion" aspect of this. The players association should lobby to get that changed to a single first round pick.
I also think that he would probably have a deal if he had an agent. I like the point about the rookie contract being mostly boilerplate, but now is the time to hire a professional.
Yeah it's bonkers how much Cousins makes. But then I step back and there aren't that many QBs clearly better than him, right?
Mahomes
Hurts
Allen
Burrow
Herbert
Lawrence
That's like 6 dudes and then you get into a whole mess of people who seems kind of similar:
Dak
Cousins
Tua
Rodgers
Lamar
Stafford
Goff?
Carr
Tannehill
Seems like Cousins is somewhere between like 7th and 15th best QB on the planet. He should be making good money.
I’m sorry, did you just put Herbert and Lawrence ahead of Rodgers and even a guy like Stafford? If those two young guys stay healthy they MIGHT have a career similar to Stafford. You’re putting a lot of weight on potential and not reality. They fit the current nfl qb mold, but the best don’t fit a mold.

I have respect for loyal fans, but Herbert is already better than Stafford ever was.
I have been a huge Lamar Jackson fan. I think he's way better than most people give him credit for.
That said, there are 31 teams who are not as stupid as the Cleveland Browns.
Get that guy out of here. Ravens gave him a chance when no one else would. They've been loyal to him to a fault. I hope he never wins another game in his career.

He's an amazing athlete but he can't throw a football or read a defense.
It doesn't matter how athletic you are if you physically don't have 99% of the tools to be a playoff caliber QB.
