Does Washington have the best collection of milers in NCAA history?

Yeah, I do remember. To my point about OU having better top end talent, not depth. But again, in case you missed it, 7 guys under 3:59: 5 under 3:55; indoors not outdoors in February for heaven’s sake, all in the same heat. Super shoes, super track, super cereal, super duper, whatever-best assembled group I’ve seen at the collegiate level all on the same stage at the same time.

General reply for the sake of logic.

LetsRun is where “they are all 25” becomes “turning 25 this year” (as will most 24-year-olds) and people think the first statement has been proven true when in fact it has been proven false. They aren’t “all 25.”

And saying that they are older due to a Covid year might explain WHY they are the best group but it doesn’t refute that they ARE the best group.

And pointing at an “era”’at another university doesn’t dissuade anyone from thinking this is the best team of milers (one academic year) ever.

And if their speed is about super shoes, look at the rankings (for a better apples-to-apples to other teams). Who had seven or eight guys rank so high?

So what’s the top thing that other collegiate coaches should be copying from Washington’s training?

Ok, so somebody please break down the Ducks season-by-season best - not what Wheating ran in Europe, not what Centro did the next year. Break down a season by season of UO's best milers to compare to the one week, one month the Huskies have produced.

Just recruit and load up in 2 or 3 events, spending all your $$$, neglicting the rest of the track team

Washington will declare six athletes for the mile at the NCAA meet.

First off, you guys are horribly negative.

The bottom line is that Washington is doing great things. You don't have to say they suck because they didn't compare to the next best thing. Everyone falls short when compared to something else, so stop ruining a big and good accomplishment.

It's mathematically possible in every way that Dave Smith, Mike Smith, and Andy Powell are all successful at what they do.

I do agree that UW is downright embarrassing in cross-country considering their talent, but perhaps attempting to get their milers to perform at the 10K is just detrimental to their training. You can't argue with the results in the mile. In a sense, the coach is there to serve the athletes. If Nathan Greene or Joe Waskom or Brian Fay thinks they can have a great contract when they graduate and they need a good mile PR or NCAA result to do that, then I'd probably not push them too hard in cross-country either.

Washington last year crushed the West region or PAC-12 or something. This year they were a little worse, but they're certainly competitive with Gonzaga and would beat them 9 times out of 10.

How do you define them sweeping the mile?

I mean that's your own expectation. I'm pretty sure Maria Garcia Rono was considered a guy who had an outstanding senior year last year, even if he didn't win indoors and outdoors.

I like them but I also like Oklahoma State, but if Okl St pulls off the DMR upset and the kid from South Carolina wins, I still think that either Fay or Lumb can get top 2 or 3 in the 3000 (who else has that closing speed?) and that there's no way you're not getting at least 2 Huskies in the top 3 in the mile.

I predict either Lumb or Fay will win the 3000, Wash gets second in the DMR, Waksom and Nathan Greene get 2nd and 3rd and Houser gets 5th in the mile. I'll predict that Fay scores no points in the 5000.

It could go up and down from there, but that's 36 points.

Can agree with you to a point, but everyone redshirts. And BYU does this every. single. year. Times are one thing (especially with the shoes), but championship racing is quite different. Should be exciting to watch!

The bigger question is nil. Is it allowing schools to bypass the limited allowed scholarships to stockpile talent?

Found it mildly interesting that UW declared 6 in the mile ..the Mile PreLim and DMR is a tough double..been done a lot..but still not optimal for DMR, ...considering they do not have an 800 Q'er..I presume one of those 6 is their 800 leg? Could be wrong...then they double(or triple) back 2 of the 6 in the 3K next day..

We will see how the altitude affects them going from sea level to almost 5000ft. It might not work out for them quite like they hoped for.

They have someone from Washington qualified in the 8 at 1:46 high and Nathan Greene also qualified in the 8 at 1:46 high but scratched. Neither will be fresh going into the DMR.

i think bc Waksom and Lumb ran so well when they got 9:16, the pressure is going to be on Lumb to go down another half second or second at least and the 800 leg.

Their 800m guy is Cass Elliott, who is normally a 400 hurdler.

Remember that anyone who is entered in an individual event can be substituted in, so maybe Andy Powell (or for that matter, any of the coaches with teams in the DMR) will wait until the relay card has to be turned in to decide who's running. The mile heats are almost 3 hours before the DMR. The 800 may/may not be tricky, as it's an hour before the DMR, plus the effects of altitude.
